JK Rowling praises HBO’s new Harry Potter cast as young stars Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout step into iconic roles.

In a magical turn of events that’s set the internet ablaze, JK Rowling has officially given her stamp of approval to the brand-new trio cast in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television reboot. The legendary author took to X (formerly Twitter) to say, “All three are wonderful. I couldn’t be happier.”

The highly anticipated series, which is slated for release in 2026, will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley—roles that were cemented in cinematic history by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

Chosen from over 30,000 hopefuls, the three young stars are already generating buzz across fan circles and media platforms. McLaughlin, an 11-year-old Scottish actor trained at Performance Academy Scotland, has already impressed on stage in Macbeth alongside heavyweights like Indira Varma and Ralph Fiennes.

Stanton, also 11, brings strong theatrical chops with performances in West End’s Matilda and Starlight Express. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Alastair Stout is stepping into Ron Weasley’s shoes in what will be his screen debut. Interestingly, his ginger-haired charm has drawn comparisons to Rupert Grint himself.

HBO’s series is set to run for a decade, with each season based on one of the original seven books. According to the network, this reboot aims to be a “faithful” and detailed adaptation of Rowling’s world—an aspect that many fans of the books felt was compressed in the blockbuster films.

The show’s production team, led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, expressed their enthusiasm over the final casting. “After an extraordinary search… we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,” they shared in a joint statement. “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold.”

Additional casting for supporting roles has also been revealed, with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost stepping in as Rubeus Hagrid.

Rowling, who remains a polarizing figure for her outspoken views on gender identity and trans rights, is attached as an executive producer. Her involvement has stirred mixed reactions from the fanbase, particularly after public friction with the original cast members who distanced themselves from her in recent years.

Despite the controversy, HBO’s casting announcement has reignited global excitement for the Wizarding World’s next chapter. And with Rowling fully on board and a decade-long journey promised, the new generation of Potter fans—and old ones alike—are already packing their trunks for Hogwarts once more.
