John Brenkus, the trailblazing mind behind ESPN’s revolutionary series Sports Science, has passed away at the age of 54, according to a statement released by his family on Sunday. The Emmy-winning creator and host, who dedicated his career to unraveling the mysteries behind athletic performance through science, reportedly lost a long battle with depression on May 31, 2025.

Known for his passionate storytelling and electrifying approach to sports analysis, Brenkus was much more than just a television host—he was a pioneer. Launching Sports Science in 2007 on Fox Sports Net before it was later acquired by ESPN, he turned complex biomechanics into mainstream fascination. From dissecting the raw speed of NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill to demystifying Joey Chestnut’s jaw-dropping eating capacity, Brenkus had a knack for turning science into spectacle.

By the time ESPN took full ownership of Sports Science, Brenkus had already appeared in more than 1,800 segments, captivating fans with content that was equal parts educational and entertaining. His work earned him six Sports Emmy Awards, a testament to both his talent and his impact on the way sports are consumed today.

But behind the accolades and camera lights was a man who courageously fought an internal struggle. In 2023, during a heartfelt conversation with fellow sports figure Marcellus Wiley, the television host revealed a deeply personal chapter: a suicide attempt that was thwarted by his loyal dog’s timely intervention. His openness sparked crucial conversations around mental health, drawing admiration from fans and colleagues alike.

Following the heartbreaking announcement of his death, tributes have poured in from across the sports media landscape. Journalists, athletes, and viewers have taken to social media to express their sorrow, admiration, and gratitude for Brenkus’s life work. Many have also echoed the importance of seeking help for mental health struggles—a cause Brenkus himself championed publicly.

The family’s official statement on X (formerly Twitter) urged compassion and awareness: “John has been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness… We encourage anyone who is suffering with depression to seek help.”
