From IIT Kharagpur to the top of Google—Sundar Pichai’s education journey paved the way for tech greatness.

Sundar Pichai’s story is a real-life tech fairytale—a brilliant mind from Chennai who climbed the global corporate ladder to become the CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc. But behind that billion-dollar success is a powerful academic foundation that shaped his vision, grit, and leadership.

Sundar Pichai: Alphabet’s CEO

Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, Sundar Pichai (full name: Pichai Sundararajan) was raised in a middle-class family where education was a top priority. His father was an electrical engineer and his mother was a stenographer. From a young age, Pichai showed an uncanny ability to memorize numbers, often astonishing his teachers and peers. This spark of intellectual talent soon evolved into academic excellence that would take him across continents.

Pichai began his academic journey at Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, and then pursued his pre-university education at Vana Vani School, located within the IIT Madras campus. He then gained admission to one of India’s most prestigious engineering colleges—the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. There, he completed his Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering, graduating with distinction.

But Sundar wasn’t done yet. Thanks to his brilliance and drive, he earned a scholarship to Stanford University, where he pursued an M.S. in Material Sciences and Engineering. Later, he went on to receive an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, the highest honors awarded at the institution.

So how did Sundar Pichai end up at Google? After working in engineering and product management at Applied Materials and briefly at McKinsey & Company, Pichai joined Google in 2004. His first project? The now-ubiquitous Google Toolbar, which helped users access Google search through Internet Explorer and Firefox. This small but strategic tool helped increase search traffic—and Sundar’s reputation within the company soared.

His big break came when he led the development of Google Chrome, the browser that revolutionized internet use. Chrome’s success not only disrupted the market—it catapulted Pichai into Google’s inner circle of decision-makers. His rapid rise continued as he oversaw the development of Chrome OS, Google Drive, Gmail, Maps, and Android, eventually leading him to become CEO of Google in 2015. Just four years later, in 2019, he took over as CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company.

What makes Pichai’s story even more inspiring is how his educational background laid the foundation for everything—critical thinking, innovation, and leadership. In a world where AI and tech are transforming industries, Pichai remains an enduring symbol that education is still the most powerful path to success.

From IIT classrooms to Silicon Valley boardrooms, Sundar Pichai’s rise proves that academic excellence, curiosity, and resilience can truly change the world.
