Trent Alexander-Arnold completes surprise early switch to Real Madrid as Liverpool secure £10 million deal.

In a move that has stirred emotions across the footballing world, Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially signed for Real Madrid, ending his long-standing career at Liverpool with a surprise early transfer worth £10 million. While the England international was due to leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of June, the Spanish giants pushed to finalize the deal by June 1 to ensure his availability for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.

The £10 million windfall will offer Liverpool a consolation for losing one of their most iconic academy graduates, with £8.4 million paid as a transfer fee and the rest covering the final month of the player’s salary, now absorbed by Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, has penned a six-year contract with the La Liga titans, reportedly securing weekly wages of £220,000. Real Madrid confirmed the agreement with a statement that read: “Real Madrid CF and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement that will keep Trent Alexander-Arnold at our club for the next six seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2031.”

The move brings a historic 20-year journey at Liverpool to a close. Having joined the club at the tender age of six, the full-back rose through the youth ranks and became an integral part of Liverpool’s golden era, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, League Cup, and the Champions League.

Liverpool’s statement was notably muted, thanking Alexander-Arnold for his service but refraining from elaborate praise. “Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes,” the statement noted.

The Reds are already moving forward, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong lined up as his replacement. The Dutch international has reportedly completed his medical ahead of an official announcement.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold is expected to compete with Dani Carvajal for the right-back position at the Bernabéu, though he will not wear his iconic No. 66 jersey due to La Liga’s numbering restrictions, which limit players to shirt numbers between 1 and 25.

Having played 354 games and scored 23 goals in his Liverpool senior career, the Anfield faithful now bid farewell to one of their own. Despite the initial backlash from fans over a free exit, this deal provides both closure and a financial uplift for Liverpool—while marking a bold new chapter for one of England’s finest defenders.
