Jim Shooter in his Marvel heyday, remembered as the bold visionary who led the comic book giant through its 1980s golden age.

Jim Shooter, one of the most influential and polarizing figures in comic book history, has passed away at the age of 73 after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Shooter’s career is the stuff of comic book legend—starting as a teenage prodigy and rising to become the editor-in-chief who revitalized Marvel Comics during its most transformative era in the 1980s.

Shooter took the helm at Marvel in 1978, a time when the industry was teetering between its fading newsstand roots and the uncharted territory of comic shop culture. With sharp vision and a firm hand, Shooter steered the company into new territory, laying the groundwork for the modern comic book industry as we know it today.

Under his leadership, Marvel experienced a creative and commercial renaissance. Landmark titles like X-Men, under the direction of Chris Claremont and John Byrne, soared in popularity. Shooter brought in bold new voices like Frank Miller, Walter Simonson, and Bill Sienkiewicz, and pioneered now-standard practices like original graphic novels, collected trade editions, and event crossovers.

“He really polarized people, but it was because he had a passion for what he was doing,” Sienkiewicz said.

But Shooter’s time at Marvel wasn’t without controversy. His leadership style was known for being demanding—sometimes to a fault. Creative conflicts were frequent, most famously his insistence that Phoenix in X-Men must die for her crimes, a decision that clashed with the creative team but became iconic in comic history.

Despite the turbulence, Shooter left an indelible mark. During his reign, Marvel’s market share soared to over 80%, with his strict editorial oversight credited with stabilizing the “House of Ideas” during an uncertain time.

Shooter’s story began when he submitted his first script at just 14 years old to DC Comics’ Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes. His debut was published in Adventure Comics #346 in 1966, and his authentic teenage voice brought new energy to the genre. Throughout the 1970s, he worked various roles before landing at Marvel in 1976 as an assistant editor and writer.

After his departure from Marvel in 1987—reportedly due to internal clashes and corporate changes—Shooter launched several ambitious projects. His most successful was Valiant Comics, a fan-favorite publisher in the early 90s. Later ventures like Defiant Comics and Broadway Comics didn’t survive, but Shooter never stopped trying to innovate.

In recent years, Shooter remained a respected elder statesman of the comic world, sharing industry insights on his blog and making regular appearances at conventions, where fans lined up to thank him for the characters and stories that shaped their childhoods.

“Jim was complicated,” said fellow comic veteran Danny Fingeroth, “but without him, and Frank Miller, Marvel might not have survived into the 1980s.”

Paul Levitz, former DC Comics president, also paid tribute:

“We played poker, competed, learned from each other, and championed the comic shop market. Jim pushed Marvel to pay royalties—he made a difference.”

As the comic book world grieves, it also remembers: Jim Shooter wasn’t just an editor or a writer—he was a force of nature, a catalyst who helped shape the modern superhero landscape and elevated comic books from pulp entertainment to powerful storytelling.

A moving new drama is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and its first official images are already drawing attention for their emotional depth.

Titled Onwards and Sideways, the film stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as two individuals whose lives are transformed after receiving diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing solely on grief, the story promises to balance heartfelt moments with humor, resilience and hope.

Helming the project is acclaimed filmmaker John Madden, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning classic Shakespeare in Love. The screenplay comes from Paul Mayhew-Archer, a celebrated British writer whose own experiences with Parkinson’s have brought authenticity to the script.

According to the filmmakers, Onwards and Sideways is designed to explore how life can continue with meaning even after a difficult diagnosis. Instead of presenting a conventional medical drama, the film examines friendship, resilience, vulnerability and the unexpected connections that emerge during life’s most challenging moments.

Joining Linney and Ifans is an accomplished supporting cast featuring Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear, both known for delivering nuanced performances across film, television and theatre.

The newly released images offer an early glimpse into the film’s intimate storytelling, capturing quiet moments between characters as they navigate uncertainty with compassion and humor. While the subject matter is undeniably serious, the visuals suggest a story that celebrates humanity rather than focusing exclusively on illness.

For Laura Linney, the project marks another emotionally rich role in a career filled with acclaimed performances in films and television. Rhys Ifans, meanwhile, continues to showcase his remarkable versatility by stepping into a character facing profound personal change.

With John Madden behind the camera, expectations are naturally high. His previous work has demonstrated a remarkable ability to combine emotional storytelling with memorable performances, making Onwards and Sideways one of the more anticipated premieres at this year’s festival.

As conversations surrounding Parkinson’s disease continue to grow globally, the film arrives with the potential to spark meaningful dialogue while reminding audiences that compassion, laughter and human connection remain powerful forces in the face of adversity.

Whether it emerges as an awards-season contender remains to be seen, but Onwards and Sideways is already positioning itself as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most emotionally compelling premieres.
