Kate Winslet Makes Directorial Debut With Son Joe Anders’ Script “Goodbye June”
Kate Winslet directs for the first time after being inspired by a script written by her son, Joe Anders, for Goodbye June.

It’s not every day that an Academy Award-winning actress decides to step behind the camera because of her child — but that’s exactly what happened with Kate Winslet.

The beloved Titanic and The Reader star has officially made her directorial debut with Goodbye June, a new film opening in theaters on December 12 and streaming on Netflix from Christmas Eve. The project was born from an unexpected moment: Winslet reading a script written by her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders, a screenwriting student at the National Film and Television School in England.

Anders originally wrote the script as part of his coursework, inspired by the emotional experience of watching his grandmother — Winslet’s mother — slowly pass away after a long battle with cancer.

He remembers the moment vividly:

“The majority of the people in that room were from that one woman, and all of the people in that room were there for that one woman at that one period in time,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The script captured that intimate energy, blending fictional characters with the emotional truth of the experience.

“Mum, don’t just say that because you’re my mum”

When Anders shared the unfinished draft with Winslet, he wasn’t expecting anything beyond feedback.

“I wasn’t pitching it,” he said. “I didn’t have it in my mind to make a movie of it at all.”

His reaction to Winslet’s encouragement was hesitant. According to him:

“I was like, ‘Mum, no, you don’t need to do that — you don’t need to pretend just because you’re my mum.’”

But Winslet wasn’t pretending. She was deeply moved.

She reportedly told him:

“If the script was a piece of shit, then yes. But it’s not.”

Her blunt honesty — delivered with her trademark humor — helped convince Anders that the story was truly worth telling on screen.

A collaboration built on history and emotion

What makes this partnership compelling is the genuine affection between them. During interviews, Winslet and Anders often interrupt each other, finishing thoughts and laughing together — not out of frustration, but excitement.

Their shared enthusiasm reflects a rare mother-son creative bond, something that audiences may feel through the film’s emotional storytelling.

From screenplay to debut feature

What began as a classroom assignment evolved into a professional production — and ultimately, Winslet’s first experience as a director.

Insiders say her transition feels natural. After decades working closely with acclaimed filmmakers, from James Cameron to Sam Mendes, she brings both artistic sensitivity and leadership to the project.

Goodbye June has already been praised for its honesty, intimacy, and emotional depth, qualities rooted in the real-life grief that inspired it.

A family story that resonates

Winslet describes the film as a tribute not just to her mother, but to the universal experience of watching loved ones gather around someone in their final days. The idea that a single person can connect generations struck her deeply.

For Anders, seeing his script become a film — and directing alongside his mother — represents a milestone he never imagined so early in his career.

A debut that could lead to more

With awards season approaching, industry observers wonder whether Winslet may continue directing in the future. Her passion for the project suggests this might be the beginning of a new creative chapter.

But for now, both mother and son appear grounded, simply grateful that a personal story has become something meaningful for audiences.

A moving new drama is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and its first official images are already drawing attention for their emotional depth.

Titled Onwards and Sideways, the film stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as two individuals whose lives are transformed after receiving diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing solely on grief, the story promises to balance heartfelt moments with humor, resilience and hope.

Helming the project is acclaimed filmmaker John Madden, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning classic Shakespeare in Love. The screenplay comes from Paul Mayhew-Archer, a celebrated British writer whose own experiences with Parkinson’s have brought authenticity to the script.

According to the filmmakers, Onwards and Sideways is designed to explore how life can continue with meaning even after a difficult diagnosis. Instead of presenting a conventional medical drama, the film examines friendship, resilience, vulnerability and the unexpected connections that emerge during life’s most challenging moments.

Joining Linney and Ifans is an accomplished supporting cast featuring Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear, both known for delivering nuanced performances across film, television and theatre.

The newly released images offer an early glimpse into the film’s intimate storytelling, capturing quiet moments between characters as they navigate uncertainty with compassion and humor. While the subject matter is undeniably serious, the visuals suggest a story that celebrates humanity rather than focusing exclusively on illness.

For Laura Linney, the project marks another emotionally rich role in a career filled with acclaimed performances in films and television. Rhys Ifans, meanwhile, continues to showcase his remarkable versatility by stepping into a character facing profound personal change.

With John Madden behind the camera, expectations are naturally high. His previous work has demonstrated a remarkable ability to combine emotional storytelling with memorable performances, making Onwards and Sideways one of the more anticipated premieres at this year’s festival.

As conversations surrounding Parkinson’s disease continue to grow globally, the film arrives with the potential to spark meaningful dialogue while reminding audiences that compassion, laughter and human connection remain powerful forces in the face of adversity.

Whether it emerges as an awards-season contender remains to be seen, but Onwards and Sideways is already positioning itself as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most emotionally compelling premieres.
