Black Rabbit Review 5 Reasons Jude Law and Jason Bateman’s Netflix Drama Fails to Connect
Despite star power and a promising setup, Black Rabbit struggles with dull characters, a gloomy tone, and an overstuffed plot.
Netflix has given us yet another dark drama, this time led by two powerhouse actors – Jude Law and Jason Bateman. On paper, Black Rabbit had everything going for it: a story of brotherhood, loyalty, and survival against the odds. But in execution, it falters.
Created in the shadow of bleak TV experiments like Mark Ruffalo’s Task, this series aims for grit but instead traps viewers in unrelenting misery. The result is a show that is hard to watch not because it’s powerful, but because it makes it nearly impossible to care.
1. A Story Rooted in Family Trauma
At its core, Black Rabbit follows two working-class brothers from Coney Island. Jake (Law) is the handsome, responsible sibling who becomes a manager for rising star Wes (played by Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù). Vince (Bateman) is the screw-up – a drummer whose addiction and poor choices destroyed their early career as a Nirvana-inspired rock group.
When Vince returns home, supposedly sober, Jake tries to give him another chance by welcoming him into the brothers’ restaurant project, the titular Black Rabbit. But as expected, old habits die hard. Vince’s gambling debts, reckless behavior, and selfish choices drag everyone down – not just Jake, but also staff like Anna (played by Abbey Lee) and the brilliant chef Roxie (Amaka Okafor).

2. Characters That Feel Like Ciphers
The biggest flaw is that it’s difficult to invest in either brother. Vince behaves with such repeated stupidity that you find yourself frustrated rather than empathetic. Jake, meanwhile, is written as little more than a firefighter – constantly cleaning up his brother’s messes without any depth of his own.
Supporting characters, from Wes and his complicated girlfriend Estelle (Cleopatra Coleman) to the loyal but weary Anna, are introduced with promise but remain underdeveloped. Their arcs feel like sketches instead of fully realized people.
3. A Gritty Tone That Becomes Suffocating
Grit can be compelling when balanced with moments of light or humor. But Black Rabbit is relentlessly bleak. Every scene is washed in harsh, unforgiving light, every conversation weighed down with despair.
Even shows like The Bear—also a tale of restaurants and family chaos—know when to let the audience breathe. By contrast, Black Rabbit piles on misery until viewers feel emotionally smothered.
4. Missed Potential in Themes
It’s clear what creators wanted: a story about loyalty, family secrets, and how love between siblings can both redeem and destroy. But instead of exploring these themes with nuance, the show becomes repetitive. Vince screws up, Jake saves him. A gangster threatens them, Jake pays. Rinse and repeat.
By the time the show reaches its finale, we know exactly how it ends: with tragedy, regret, and little growth for either brother.

5. Star Power Can’t Save Weak Writing
Casting Jude Law and Jason Bateman was a coup. Law brings charisma, while Bateman is often brilliant at playing flawed men. But here, they are wasted. Law feels miscast as a rough-around-the-edges hustler, and Bateman plays Vince without enough complexity to make him sympathetic.
It’s not their performances that fail—it’s the writing. Even the most talented actors can’t elevate characters that feel thinly sketched and trapped in repetitive cycles.
The Verdict
Black Rabbit is not unwatchable. There are flashes of brilliance: Amaka Okafor’s Roxie is a standout, and certain moments of brotherly tension between Law and Bateman hint at a better show buried underneath. But overall, the series is too gloomy, too unfocused, and too joyless to recommend.
If you’re in the mood for a dark family drama, there are stronger options. Otherwise, save your energy—and maybe rewatch something lighter, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine—to recover from the weight of this misfire.
Black Rabbit is now streaming on Netflix.

Tom Holland’s Next Big Role Could Be His Toughest Yet as He Commits to Doing Every Dance Move Himself
After wrapping work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, Tom Holland is preparing to portray Fred Astaire in a demanding biopic, determined to perform all of the dancing without a double.
After an action-packed schedule featuring Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, Tom Holland is already setting his sights on an entirely different challenge—bringing legendary dancer Fred Astaire to life on the big screen.
The 30-year-old actor recently shared that the long-awaited Fred Astaire biopic is expected to be his next major project, and he has one ambitious goal in mind: performing every dance sequence himself.
For Holland, the role represents much more than another career milestone. It is also a chance to reconnect with a passion he left behind years ago.
“One of my biggest regrets in my career is after I finished Billy Elliot, I quit dancing,” Holland said while reflecting on his early years as a performer.

Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces, Holland built his reputation as a talented stage performer in the musical Billy Elliot, where his dancing skills earned widespread praise. However, as his acting career accelerated, dance gradually took a back seat.
Now, portraying Fred Astaire offers the opportunity to revisit those roots.
A Role That Demands Perfection
Known as one of cinema’s greatest dancers, Fred Astaire set standards that few performers have ever matched. His effortless style, precision, and elegance transformed musical films and influenced generations of entertainers.
Holland acknowledged the challenge ahead and made it clear that he wants audiences to see authentic performances rather than relying heavily on body doubles or digital tricks.
His commitment to performing all of the choreography himself is expected to require months of intensive dance rehearsals and physical preparation.

Busy Summer, Bigger Future
The announcement comes after an exceptionally busy period for Holland. He has been filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest installment in the hugely successful superhero franchise produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures.
At the same time, he has also been involved in The Odyssey, the ambitious epic directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The back-to-back productions mark one of the busiest phases of Holland’s career.
Despite the demanding schedule, the actor appears excited about shifting from blockbuster action to the graceful world of classic dance cinema.
Returning to His Original Passion
Fans have long admired Holland’s athleticism in action films, but many remember that his professional journey actually began with dance before Hollywood came calling.
The upcoming Fred Astaire biopic could allow audiences to see a different side of the actor—one rooted in musical performance, discipline, and classic showmanship.
If Holland succeeds in performing every dance routine himself, the film may become one of the most physically demanding performances of his career and a fitting tribute to one of cinema’s greatest entertainers.
With blockbuster franchises already under his belt, Holland’s next chapter could prove that sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t saving the world—it’s mastering the dance floor.
