When a plane crashes and lives are lost, the world expects its leaders to rise to the moment. Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau tried — but what followed his four-minute condolence video wasn’t sympathy. It was outrage. And now, a national conversation about language, identity, and leadership is threatening to overshadow the tragedy itself.

Two French Words. Four Minutes. A Nation Furious.

After Sunday’s deadly crash at LaGuardia Airport in New York, Rousseau posted a condolence video online. It ran for four minutes. In that entire time, he spoke exactly two words in French — “bonjour” and “merci.”

For a country with two official languages, for a company headquartered in Montreal, Quebec — where French is the primary language — and in the wake of a crash that killed a French-speaking Quebecer pilot, the reaction was swift and brutal.

Hundreds of complaints flooded into the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages. Politicians from across the spectrum lined up to condemn the CEO. And by Thursday, Rousseau was forced to issue a formal apology.

‘I Sincerely Apologize’ — Rousseau Breaks His Silence

In a written statement, Rousseau said:

“I am deeply saddened that my inability to speak French has diverted attention from the profound grief of the families and the great resilience of Air Canada’s employees, who have demonstrated outstanding professionalism despite the events of the past few days.”

He then added: “Despite many lessons over several years, unfortunately, I am still unable to express myself adequately in French. I sincerely apologize for this, but I am continuing my efforts to improve.”

The apology was genuine in tone — but it also revealed something damning: Rousseau has been taking French lessons for years and still cannot hold a conversation in the language.

The Crash That Started It All

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday evening when an Air Canada Jazz flight being landed at LaGuardia Airport collided with a fire truck on the runway. Both pilots aboard were killed — Antoine Forest, a French-speaking Quebecer, and Mackenzie Gunther.

Their deaths shook Canada. And when the CEO of the country’s largest airline delivered his message of grief almost entirely in English — with French subtitles as an afterthought — Quebec felt the insult acutely.

Quebec Premier Calls for Resignation

Quebec Premier François Legault didn’t mince words. He called on Rousseau to resign — pointing out that when Rousseau was appointed president of Air Canada in February 2021, he had promised to learn French. Five years later, that promise remained unfulfilled.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also weighed in, calling the English-only video a “lack of compassion and judgment.” Carney added that he looked forward to hearing more from Air Canada’s board of directors — a pointed signal that accountability may be coming from the top.

A Pattern of Controversy

This is not the first time Rousseau has ignited a firestorm over language. Political science professor Daniel Béland of McGill University in Montreal noted:

“Back in November 2021, less than a year after he was appointed CEO, one of his first major speeches triggered a strong controversy among Francophones, as the speech was almost exclusively in English. At the time, Rousseau apologized and pledged to learn French. He did later take French lessons but, as the new controversy suggests, it was probably not very successful to say the least.”

The pattern is hard to ignore — apology, promise, repeat.

A Country Divided on the Real Issue

Not everyone agrees that language should be the headline here. Former Conservative Cabinet minister Jason Kenney pushed back, arguing he would “rather the CEO of Canada’s flagship carrier focus his scarce time on safety and reliability than language training” — a view that reflects a genuine divide in how Canadians see the controversy.

But Quebec’s identity runs deep. The province has been culturally and politically protective of its French language since the 1760s, when the British completed their conquest of what was then called New France. Today, roughly 80% of Quebec’s population is French-speaking — and Air Canada, headquartered in their city, is expected to reflect that.

What Happens Next?

The apology has been made. The pressure is mounting. And as Air Canada’s board of directors faces growing scrutiny, the question isn’t just whether Rousseau survives this politically — it’s whether a company this central to Canadian identity can continue to be led by someone who still can’t say “I am deeply sorry” in the language of the people he’s supposed to be speaking to.
