She Wished Us a Happy 4th of July Just Days Ago Pop Icon Connie Francis Dies at 87 After Mysterious Hospitalization
From chart-topping fame in the ‘60s to going viral on TikTok in 2024, Connie Francis leaves behind a musical legacy that touched generations — but her final days remain wrapped in painful mystery.
The world is mourning the loss of Connie Francis, the unforgettable voice behind “Where the Boys Are Stupid Cupid”, and “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool”. The pop legend died on the night of July 17, just weeks after being hospitalized with what she described as “extreme pain.” She was 87.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Ron Roberts, president of Concetta Records and longtime confidant of Francis.
It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night,” Roberts wrote in a Facebook post early Thursday morning. “I know that Connie would approve that her fans are among the first to learn of this sad news.
Fans were left stunned, especially given Francis’ recent social media activity. Just two weeks ago, she posted an update about being in the hospital for medical tests, writing:
I am back in hospital where I have been undergoing tests and checks to determine the cause(s) of the extreme pain I have been experiencing.
Then, on July 4, Francis offered fans a ray of hope.
Today I am feeling much better after a good night,” she wrote, wishing her followers a Happy Independence Day and thanking them for their prayers and kind thoughts.

Sadly, this would become one of her final public messages.
A Voice That Defined an Era
Connie Francis, born Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero in Newark, New Jersey, broke barriers in an industry dominated by male artists. In 1960, she made history by becoming the first woman to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her emotional anthem “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.”
She would go on to earn multiple No. 1 hits, including classics like:
- Where the Boys Are
- Who’s Sorry Now?
- Mama
- Pretty Little Baby– which recently gained viral traction on TikTok, featured in over 3 million lip-sync videos, surprising a whole new generation of fans.
Known for her sweet yet emotionally resonant voice, Francis became a staple of jukeboxes, dance halls, and family living rooms across America.
A Life of Triumph and Tragedy
Francis’ life, while filled with music and accolades, was not without personal hardship. She was married four times and experienced several tumultuous relationships. During her third marriage to restaurateur Joseph Garzilli, she adopted a son, Joey, who survives her.
In her later years, Francis found love again with Tony Ferretti, a longtime friend and companion, whom she dated until his death in 2022.
Beyond the spotlight, the singer was a survivor in every sense. She faced sexual assault, battled mental health struggles, and even overcame a near-fatal surgery. Her ability to return — again and again — to her craft and her fans spoke volumes about her strength.
I’m still standing,” she said in a 2017 interview. That’s the headline. I’m still here.
Remembering Connie in the Digital Age
In an unexpected twist, Connie Francis experienced a major resurgence on TikTok in early 2024, when a clip of “Pretty Little Baby” began trending. Teenagers across the globe started lip-syncing to her songs, unknowingly bringing back to life the voice of a woman who first topped the charts over 60 years ago.
Many users expressed disbelief that the viral hit was originally recorded in the 1960s.
This isn’t Lana Del Rey?” one viral comment read.
Francis even acknowledged the trend herself in a lighthearted post, writing,
Who knew I’d be a TikTok star at 87?
An Unanswered Mystery
What caused the “extreme pain” that led Francis to her final hospitalization remains unclear. She had promised fans she would share more once doctors had answers — but that day never came.
Was it a pre-existing condition, an undiagnosed illness, or simply the toll of age?
No official statement on the cause of death has been released by her family at the time of writing.

Final Farewell
Connie Francis leaves behind her son, Joey Garzilli, and millions of devoted fans around the world who grew up with her voice, cried to her heartbreak songs, and recently rediscovered her through the magic of digital platforms.
Her death marks not just the end of a musical chapter, but the silencing of a voice that once united America during both joyous and turbulent times.
Music was my life,” she once said. “And I hope it helped someone, somewhere, feel a little less alone.
Rest in peace, Connie. Your voice may be gone — but your music will echo forever.

‘Onwards and Sideways’ Unveils First Images of Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans’ Powerful New Drama
The emotional film follows two lives transformed by unexpected diagnoses and is set to make its world premiere at TIFF.
A moving new drama is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and its first official images are already drawing attention for their emotional depth.
Titled Onwards and Sideways, the film stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as two individuals whose lives are transformed after receiving diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing solely on grief, the story promises to balance heartfelt moments with humor, resilience and hope.
Helming the project is acclaimed filmmaker John Madden, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning classic Shakespeare in Love. The screenplay comes from Paul Mayhew-Archer, a celebrated British writer whose own experiences with Parkinson’s have brought authenticity to the script.

According to the filmmakers, Onwards and Sideways is designed to explore how life can continue with meaning even after a difficult diagnosis. Instead of presenting a conventional medical drama, the film examines friendship, resilience, vulnerability and the unexpected connections that emerge during life’s most challenging moments.
Joining Linney and Ifans is an accomplished supporting cast featuring Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear, both known for delivering nuanced performances across film, television and theatre.

The newly released images offer an early glimpse into the film’s intimate storytelling, capturing quiet moments between characters as they navigate uncertainty with compassion and humor. While the subject matter is undeniably serious, the visuals suggest a story that celebrates humanity rather than focusing exclusively on illness.
For Laura Linney, the project marks another emotionally rich role in a career filled with acclaimed performances in films and television. Rhys Ifans, meanwhile, continues to showcase his remarkable versatility by stepping into a character facing profound personal change.
With John Madden behind the camera, expectations are naturally high. His previous work has demonstrated a remarkable ability to combine emotional storytelling with memorable performances, making Onwards and Sideways one of the more anticipated premieres at this year’s festival.
As conversations surrounding Parkinson’s disease continue to grow globally, the film arrives with the potential to spark meaningful dialogue while reminding audiences that compassion, laughter and human connection remain powerful forces in the face of adversity.
Whether it emerges as an awards-season contender remains to be seen, but Onwards and Sideways is already positioning itself as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most emotionally compelling premieres.
