Gaming world stunned as Electronic Arts sold in $55bn mega deal… Saudi Arabia, Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s firm behind record buyout

The $55bn acquisition of Electronic Arts makes history as the largest leveraged buyout ever, raising questions about debt, jobs, and the future of iconic titles like EA FC and The Sims.

Electronic Arts sold for $55bn: Saudi Arabia and Silver Lake lead record gaming buyout
Electronic Arts headquarters: The gaming giant behind The Sims and EA Sports FC has been sold in a record $55bn deal led by Saudi Arabia’s PIF.

The gaming industry has witnessed one of its most seismic moments. Electronic Arts (EA) , the publisher behind cultural juggernauts like The Sims, Need for Speed, and the rebranded EA Sports FC, has agreed to a $55 billion sale, the biggest leveraged buyout in corporate history.

The blockbuster deal sees a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), private equity giant Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners join forces to take EA private. The company will be delisted from the stock exchange, with shareholders set to receive a 25% premium—valuing EA at $210 per share.

A Deal of Unprecedented Scale

The agreement becomes the second-most valuable gaming acquisition ever, following Microsoft’s $69bn takeover of Activision Blizzard in 2023. That deal only cleared regulators after Microsoft handed cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft .

Industry observers say this latest purchase dwarfs even those complexities. “It’s a powerful recognition of our work,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson (LinkedIn), who will remain at the helm. “Together with our partners, we will create transformative experiences to inspire generations to come.”

But at What Cost?

The buyers will contribute roughly $36bn in equity, while another $20bn will be financed through debt, sparking fears within the industry.

Analyst Christopher Dring noted, “An acquisition from private equity is a surprise and there’s a lot of anxiety around this deal. Servicing $20bn of debt means EA will rely heavily on cash cows like Madden NFL, Battlefield 6, and EA Sports FC. That pressure may cut into budgets for new IPs and even lead to staff reductions.”

Such worries are not unfounded. The gaming sector has seen widespread layoffs in 2024 and 2025, with giants like Sony and Embracer Group forced to slim down operations despite soaring revenues.

Saudi Arabia’s Expanding Gaming Empire

For Saudi Arabia, the move is part of a clear strategy to dominate global gaming. Its PIF, controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , has poured billions into the sector.

In 2023, PIF’s subsidiary Savvy Games Group bought Scopely Inc., the maker of Monopoly Go, for $4.9bn. In March 2025, Saudi money also snapped up the gaming arm of Niantic, makers of Pokémon Go, for $3.5bn. The Kingdom has hosted the eSports World Cup and will stage the Olympic Esports Games in 2027, signaling its ambitions beyond oil.

However, the move is not without controversy. Human rights concerns continue to cast a shadow over Saudi investments. A UN report in 2019 held the Kingdom responsible for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a fact that still raises ethical questions about PIF’s global expansion.

What It Means for Gamers

For players worldwide, the immediate question is whether their beloved franchises will change. EA’s football series, rebranded as EA Sports FC after its split with FIFA, has sold over 325 million copies since 1993. The Sims has surpassed 200 million sales, and Need for Speed over 150 million.

While Wilson insists the deal will “level up” EA’s future, industry insiders caution that servicing debt could see more sequels and fewer risks. The focus may lean heavily on microtransactions, live-service models, and annualized sports titles.

Still, the sheer scale of this acquisition cements gaming as one of the most valuable sectors in entertainment—bigger than movies, bigger than music, and now firmly a geopolitical prize.

Josh Hokit defends his remarks about Michelle Obama, calling them a misunderstood “compliment” during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.

UFC fighter Josh Hokit has defended his controversial remarks about former First Lady Michelle Obama, insisting that his comments were intended as a compliment rather than an insult.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Hokit addressed the backlash that followed his earlier statement, which drew strong reactions across social media and sports communities. He said the intention behind his words was misunderstood and taken out of context.

“I thought it was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with freedom of speech,” Hokit said during the interview, standing by his decision to speak openly despite the criticism.

The controversy began after Hokit referred to Michelle Obama in a manner that many online users found offensive. The remark quickly circulated across platforms, sparking debates about respect, public figures, and the boundaries of free expression in sports media.

Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States and wife of former President Barack Obama, remains one of the most influential public figures in global politics and culture. Any commentary involving her often draws immediate public attention and scrutiny.

Hokit, who transitioned from a multi-sport athletic background into mixed martial arts, has been building his profile within the UFC ecosystem. However, this incident has now placed him under a brighter spotlight than his recent sporting performances.

Supporters argue that his clarification should be taken into account, emphasizing that intent matters in public discourse. Critics, however, believe the remark reflects a lack of awareness about the responsibility athletes carry when speaking on public platforms.

The episode also reignites a broader discussion within combat sports and entertainment media about the balance between “freedom of speech” and respectful communication. In the era of viral clips and instant reactions, even offhand comments can escalate into global debates within hours.

For now, Hokit appears firm in his stance — that his words were misinterpreted and that his intent was never to insult, but to express admiration in his own way.

As the discussion continues online, the incident highlights once again how quickly sports, politics, and public perception can collide in today’s digital world.
