EasyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis praised the move, noting that government backing of aviation projects is crucial for economic growth. He added that modernising airspace is key to achieving sustainable growth in the aviation industry.

Challenges and Opposition

Despite the approval, the project could face delays. The opposition group Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) announced plans for a judicial review, potentially adding 12–18 months to the timeline. Gatwick officials, meanwhile, pledged to limit initial construction work, such as new car parks, until national highway links are upgraded to prevent congestion.

The Planning Inspectorate, which initially recommended refusing the runway, surprisingly endorsed the project after Gatwick agreed to adopt a legally binding target of 54% of passengers arriving by public transport, compared to 47% currently. Alexander stressed that the airport must demonstrate sufficient assurance that these targets will be met to maintain approval.
