Shelley Fabares Dies at 82: ‘Johnny Angel’ Singer and ‘Coach’ Star Leaves Behind a Remarkable Hollywood Legacy
The beloved actress, who became famous as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show and later starred in Coach, died in Los Angeles at 82, her family confirmed.
Hollywood is mourning the loss of Shelley Fabares, the actress and singer whose career stretched across generations and included some of television’s most memorable sitcoms.
Fabares, best known for playing Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show and Christine Armstrong on Coach, died Saturday, August 22, in Los Angeles at the age of 82. Her family confirmed her death and remembered her as a woman whose warmth, humor and generosity touched the lives of those around her.
Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944, Shelley Fabares entered show business as a child. She made her television debut at just 10 years old on The Loretta Young Show, beginning a career that would eventually span television, film and music.
The role that made Shelley Fabares a household name
Fabares’ breakthrough came when she joined The Donna Reed Show as Mary Stone. The popular family sitcom ran from 1958 to 1966, with Fabares becoming a familiar face to millions of television viewers.
Her years on the series also opened an unexpected door into music.
In 1962, Fabares released “Johnny Angel,” a song that became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The success turned the young actress into a teen idol and gave her a brief but highly successful recording career.
The song’s success remains one of the most surprising chapters of her career. Although acting remained her primary profession, “Johnny Angel” became closely associated with her name decades after its release.
From television to Elvis Presley films
During the 1960s, Fabares also moved into feature films and appeared alongside Elvis Presley in three movies: Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake.
Her filmography also included work with major Hollywood names such as Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra.
But Fabares’ career was far from limited to the glamour of 1960s Hollywood. She continued appearing on television through the following decades, including roles in One Day at a Time and the acclaimed television film Brian’s Song.
‘Coach’ brought another defining chapter
In 1989, Fabares took on another career-defining role as Christine Armstrong on Coach, starring opposite Craig T. Nelson.
The sitcom eventually became a major television success, running for nine seasons. Fabares’ performance earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Her role on Coach introduced her to another generation of viewers and demonstrated the longevity of a career that had begun when she was still a child.
Nelson later remembered his longtime co-star warmly, describing her as an extraordinary woman and an important part of his life.

A life that included major personal challenges
Away from the cameras, Fabares also experienced serious health challenges.
She became an advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness after her mother was affected by the disease. Later, Fabares faced a life-threatening liver condition and underwent a liver transplant in 2000.
She was married to Mike Farrell, the actor best known for MASH*, from 1984 until her death.
Her family said Fabares will be remembered not simply for the characters she played but for the person she was away from the spotlight.
“Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort,” her family said in a statement, describing her as someone who made people feel welcomed, valued and cared for.
A career remembered across generations
From a teenage star on The Donna Reed Show to a chart-topping singer, Elvis Presley co-star and Emmy-nominated actress on Coach, Shelley Fabares built a career that remained recognizable across several generations of audiences.
Her journey began on television as a child and ultimately became a story of remarkable staying power in Hollywood.
For fans who grew up watching Mary Stone, singing along to “Johnny Angel,” or following Christine Armstrong on Coach, her passing marks the end of an era.
But her performances remain — and so does the unmistakable legacy of an actress who spent decades becoming part of people’s lives.

Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett’s ‘Verity’ Just Dropped Its First Teaser — And It’s Darker Than Anyone Was Prepared For…
BookTok, hold onto something.
Amazon MGM has released the first official teaser for Verity — the long-anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover‘s bestselling 2018 psychological thriller — and if you thought this was going to be anything like a standard romance adaptation, think again.
The teaser opens on Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer creeping through a darkened, sprawling estate in a silk robe. She finds Jeremy Crawford, played by Josh Hartnett, watching television alone — and slides onto his lap. The two begin kissing passionately, until Lowen pulls back and realises something has shifted. Jeremy is no longer Jeremy. He is Verity.
Anne Hathaway, playing the bedridden and supposedly incapacitated author Verity Crawford, stares back with a look that can only be described as sinister — before grabbing Lowen’s head and forcing a kiss that draws blood. The blood transfers to Verity’s teeth. Lowen screams.
And then Kylie Minogue‘s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” kicks in.
It is, to put it simply, a statement of intent.
The teaser wastes no time establishing the film’s psychological stakes. Hathaway’s Verity is shown in two modes — polished, powerful, and commanding before her accident; then broken, wheelchair-bound, and being spoon-fed in a remote estate after it. The contrast is chilling. A voiceover delivers Verity’s haunting warning to Lowen directly:
“Even with my generous warning, you’re going to continue to ingest my words. But no one thing. There is no light where we’re going. Darkness ahead.”
The montage that accompanies it — a bedroom scene between Lowen and Jeremy, a mysterious substance being poured into a drink, blood, dark corridors, and more screaming — makes absolutely clear that director Michael Showalter is not pulling punches.

Showalter directs from a screenplay by Nick Antosca. The film follows Lowen, hired by Jeremy to ghostwrite the remaining books in his famous wife’s series after Verity is left incapacitated by a “mysterious accident.” But upon arriving at the Crawford home, Lowen uncovers a secret manuscript that reveals deeply unsettling truths about the family — leaving her to question whether Verity’s private writings are fiction, fantasy, or a chilling confession from a woman far more dangerous than she appears.
Filming took place across New York City in early 2025. Hathaway and Hartnett were spotted filming together in February, running hand in hand through the streets in semi-formal attire. Johnson was later photographed on set covered in fake blood — apparently recreating the novel’s infamous car accident sequence.
Verity is the latest Colleen Hoover adaptation to make the leap from page to screen. Her novel It Ends With Us became one of 2024’s most talked-about films, while Regretting You and Reminders of Him have also been adapted. But Verity — darker, more sinister, and far more morally complex than anything Hoover has written — is widely considered the adaptation fans have been most desperate to see done right.
Based on this teaser, it looks like they just might have.
Verity hits theatres in October 2026.

Washington, D.C. Enacts the Nation’s Toughest Anti-Scalping Ticket Resale Law
The new legislation caps ticket resale markups at 10% above face value and bans speculative ticket sales, setting a new national standard for consumer protection.
Buying tickets for concerts, sporting events, and live entertainment in Washington, D.C. could soon become significantly fairer for consumers after the city introduced what is being described as the strictest anti-scalping ticketing policy in the United States.
Under the newly approved regulations, ticket resellers will no longer be allowed to charge more than 10% above the original face value of a ticket. The legislation also outlaws the sale of speculative tickets—listings where sellers advertise tickets they do not yet own or cannot immediately deliver.
The move is aimed at addressing one of the biggest frustrations for fans: soaring resale prices that often make popular events unaffordable within minutes of tickets going on sale.

Consumer advocates have long argued that automated purchasing tools and aggressive resale practices have created an unfair marketplace, where tickets intended for fans are instead snapped up and resold at significantly inflated prices. Washington’s latest policy seeks to restore transparency and affordability by limiting excessive markups and ensuring that listed tickets are actually in the seller’s possession.
The ban on speculative ticket sales is another major feature of the law. Such listings have drawn criticism because buyers sometimes purchase tickets that sellers have not yet secured, creating uncertainty over whether the tickets will ultimately be delivered.

Supporters believe the legislation will provide stronger consumer protections while encouraging a more transparent resale market. Fans purchasing tickets through resale platforms are expected to benefit from greater confidence that listed seats genuinely exist and are available for transfer.
The policy also reflects a broader national conversation about ticketing practices in the live entertainment industry. Rising ticket prices, resale fees, and high-profile controversies surrounding major concerts and sporting events have prompted lawmakers across the United States to examine whether stronger consumer safeguards are needed.
Industry observers say Washington’s approach could influence similar legislative efforts in other states and cities if the rules prove successful in improving ticket accessibility without disrupting legitimate resale activity.
While businesses operating in the secondary ticket market may need to adjust their pricing strategies, consumer groups view the new framework as a significant step toward balancing the interests of event organizers, ticket sellers, and fans.
As the regulations take effect, all eyes will be on Washington, D.C., where policymakers hope the country’s toughest anti-scalping law will make attending live events more affordable and transparent for everyone.
