In the wake of a seismic military operation that has shaken the Middle East to its core, a group of Iranian filmmakers — long operating in the shadows of one of the world’s most censorious regimes — has stepped forward with a statement that is equal parts political bombshell and humanitarian plea. The IIFMA, made up of members of Iran’s dissident filmmaking community, released a formal statement that did not mince words.

“The Islamic regime in Iran, following the national uprising and tragic massacre of January 2025, has left its defenseless citizens with no option but to seek urgent humanitarian intervention from the international community,” the statement reads.

It is a sentence that carries the weight of years — of filmmakers arrested mid-production, of directors imprisoned for telling the truth, of artists who risked everything simply by picking up a camera.

What the IIFMA Is Actually Asking For

The statement goes further than sympathy. It is a call to action — carefully worded, but unmistakably clear in its intent.

“The Iranian Independent Filmmakers Association calls upon the international community to uphold Iran’s sovereignty and to prioritize the protection of tens of millions of citizens held hostage by the Islamic regime. We advocate for targeted actions against government officials and oppressive agents while avoiding harm to innocent civilians. It is essential to put an end to this archaic cycle of patriarchal violence.”

The phrase “targeted actions against government officials and oppressive agents” is striking — not the language of artists who typically traffic in metaphor, but of a community that has watched friends, colleagues, and fellow citizens disappear into Evin Prison, and has decided that silence is no longer a form of survival.

The Context Nobody Should Forget

To understand why this statement matters, you have to go back to January 2025, when what the IIFMA calls the “national uprising and tragic massacre” took place. Protests had been building for months. The regime’s response, according to human rights organizations and reports from inside Iran, was brutal — a crackdown that left hundreds dead and thousands imprisoned.

Whether one agrees with that framing or not, the geopolitical consequences are already cascading across the region.
