Judy Reyes calls High Potential her “boo” and teases Scrubs revival with Zach Braff
Judy Reyes says High Potential is her “boo” while calling Scrubs her “side piece” ahead of the show’s 2026 revival.

For Judy Reyes, juggling two beloved TV shows feels like balancing romance and nostalgia. The actress, who stars as Lieutenant Selena Soto in ABC’s cop-and-consultant drama High Potential, is also preparing to step back into her iconic role as nurse Carla Espinosa in the long-awaited revival of Scrubs.

But when asked how she feels about each project, Reyes didn’t hold back. “High Potential is my boo,” the 57-year-old joked. “(Scrubs) is my side piece.”

The rise of High Potential

Now in its second season, High Potential has been making waves far beyond ABC’s Tuesday night lineup. Reyes admitted she was stunned to see billboards along Sunset Boulevard and even subway ads outside her New York hotel room.

“It doesn’t really feel real because it’s so unexpected,” Reyes told USA TODAY. “People are still so passionate about the show. I’m grateful.”

The series follows Morgan, played by Kaitlin Olson, a single mother with extraordinary intellectual abilities who helps detectives crack complex cases. Reyes’ Lieutenant Soto recognizes Morgan’s genius despite skepticism within the department.

“I feel like Soto being a woman can relate to being either dismissed or disregarded,” Reyes explained. “That’s why audiences really connect with her partnership with Morgan.”

On Mekhi Phifer’s mysterious role

The Season 2 premiere introduced a surprising character tied to Morgan’s backstory, played by Mekhi Phifer. Though Reyes hasn’t filmed any scenes with him yet, she confessed she was eager to.

“I’m pissed about that, by the way,” she said with a laugh. “He’s the sweetest guy, and I felt like I was related to him. I’m anxious to see where they’re going to take his character.”

Revisiting the legacy of Scrubs

While High Potential is her present, Scrubs remains her past—and her future. The medical comedy that ran for nine seasons on NBC and later ABC is officially set for a 2026 revival with its original cast, including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke.

“It was a cult classic,” Reyes reflected. “People quote it, people rewatch it all the time. It’s like a comfort show for people. I didn’t realize that’s what I was part of until it was over.”

She also teased the cast’s long-running Scrubs group text, led in part by Braff, where inside jokes, memes, and nostalgia keep the friendships alive off-screen.

Balancing love and legacy

For Reyes, the timing couldn’t be more surreal. One show (High Potential) is building momentum with fresh storylines, while another (Scrubs) is being dusted off as a fan-favorite comeback.

Her perspective? Embrace both. “High Potential keeps surprising me, and Scrubs just keeps reminding me what a blessing it was to be part of something people still love,” she said.

Originally created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs became one of the most popular medical comedies of the 2000s by blending workplace humor with emotional storytelling. The series stood out for its unique mix of comedy, friendship, and realistic moments surrounding life in a hospital.

The revival has attempted to capture the spirit of the original while introducing a new generation of characters. Bringing back Braff, Chalke and Faison allows longtime viewers to reconnect with familiar personalities, while younger cast members help push the story into new territory.
