Harry Kane has another trophy to celebrate — and this one underlines just how extraordinary his transformation at Bayern Munich has been.

The England captain has been named Germany’s Footballer of the Year for 2026 following a sensational campaign in which he scored 61 goals in 51 competitive appearances for Bayern.

Kane secured 272 votes in the annual poll organised by German football magazine Kicker, finishing comfortably ahead of Bayern teammate Michael Olise, who collected 203.

VfB Stuttgart and Germany striker Deniz Undav finished a distant third with 61 votes.

For Kane, it is another reward for a season he has already described as the best of his career.

There was little mystery surrounding why German sports journalists placed Kane at the top of their ballots.

The 33-year-old scored an astonishing 61 goals across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign as Bayern successfully defended their Bundesliga title and lifted the DFB-Pokal.

His Bundesliga numbers were equally remarkable.

Kane finished the league season with 36 goals, enough to make him Europe’s leading league scorer and secure the European Golden Shoe for the second time in his career.

Reflecting on the campaign after receiving the Golden Shoe, Kane summed it up simply:

Giulia Gwinn completes historic Bayern sweep

There was another reason for celebration in Munich as Germany international Giulia Gwinn was voted the country’s Women’s Footballer of the Year.

Gwinn received 106 votes, narrowly beating Bayern teammate Klara Bühl, who finished with 94. Jule Brand was third with 82 votes.

Her victory even surprised Gwinn herself after injuries disrupted parts of her previous campaign.

The result nevertheless created a piece of Bayern history: the men’s and women’s Footballer of the Year awards went to players from the same club, alongside the Coach of the Year honour.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer hailed the achievement, saying the club was proud to see its men’s and women’s teams recognised together.

Portuguese footballer Quevin Castro, a former West Bromwich Albion midfielder, has died at the age of just 25 after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal, leaving the football community in shock.

Castro was representing Real Sport Clube in a pre-season game against top-flight side Estrela da Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira on Saturday, August 22, when he suddenly collapsed during the opening stages of the match.

Medical assistance was provided immediately. A doctor from Estrela da Amadora used a defibrillator as emergency services were called to the stadium. Castro was subsequently transported to hospital but could not be saved.

The precise underlying medical cause of his death has not been publicly confirmed.

Real Sport Clube mourns ‘far more than a player’

The tragedy has hit Real Sport Clube particularly hard, with the club describing Castro as much more than simply a member of its playing squad.

Sporting CP expressed its “deep sorrow” over the 25-year-old’s death and offered solidarity to his relatives, friends and teammates during what it described as a moment of profound grief.

West Brom ‘devastated’ by Castro’s death

Castro’s former club West Bromwich Albion said it was “devastated” to learn of his untimely death.

The English club announced a tribute during its match against Burnley, with supporters invited to applaud in the 25th minute in memory of Castro. West Brom’s players were also set to wear black armbands.

The choice of the 25th minute carries an especially poignant meaning. Castro had celebrated his 25th birthday on August 16, less than a week before his death.

Castro’s career took him across English football

While at West Brom, Castro gained further experience through loan spells with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead.

He left The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023 and continued his career with several English clubs, including York City, King’s Lynn, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City and most recently Eastbourne Borough.

He later returned to his native Portugal to join Real Sport Clube ahead of the new season.

His death came just as another chapter of his career was beginning.
