Uma Thurman Is Back in Action — So Why Does Amazon’s New Thriller ‘Pretty Lethal’ Waste Her Like This…

With a John Wick-style premise, a cast full of rising stars, and ballet as its backdrop, Pretty Lethal had everything it needed to be the sleeper hit of the year. It isn’t — and the reason why is frustrating.

'Pretty Lethal' Review: Uma Thurman Wasted in Amazon's Ballet Thriller | Daily Global Diary
Uma Thurman leads an impressive cast in Amazon's Pretty Lethal — a ballet-meets-action thriller that promises more than it ultimately delivers.

On paper, Pretty Lethal should not be this easy to argue with. You have Uma Thurman — the woman who made Kill Bill a cultural religion — in an action-thriller about dancers who become killers. You have a John Wick energy hanging over the premise like a promise. You have Amazon Prime Video, a platform with the budget and distribution muscle to make something genuinely cinematic. And then you watch it, and somewhere around the midpoint, you start doing the quiet mental accounting of everything that was left on the table.

Pretty Lethal is not a bad film. It is something more frustrating than that: a film that can see exactly how good it could have been and simply declines to go there.

The Premise Has Real Bones

The setup is genuinely compelling. Five American ballet dancers, far from home and deep inside a world of discipline, sacrifice, and physical extremity, find themselves in the crosshairs of violent Hungarian gangsters. What begins as a story about the brutality of elite dance — the torn ligaments, the shattered self-worth, the consuming obsession — pivots into something harder and bloodier. The dancers have to fight back. And it turns out that bodies trained to move with precision and power translate, under the right circumstances, into something genuinely dangerous.

It is a smart conceit. The overlap between the physical demands of professional ballet and the choreography of screen combat is not as much of a stretch as it might initially sound — Black Swan explored the psychological violence of dance, and the John Wick franchise built an entire aesthetic philosophy around the idea that discipline is violence in waiting. Pretty Lethal had legitimate creative ancestry to draw from. The DNA was there.

The Cast Delivers More Than the Script Deserves

Maddie Ziegler — who first found global recognition on Dance Moms and has spent years working to be taken seriously as a performer — brings exactly the physical credibility this kind of film demands. Her movement vocabulary is extraordinary, and the action sequences that lean into her background are the film’s most purely satisfying moments. She is doing real work here, and it shows.

Iris Apatow, daughter of director Judd Apatow and actress Leslie Mann, continues to quietly build a filmography that suggests she is a far more interesting screen presence than her famous parentage tends to make the headline. Her comic timing and emotional grounding give Pretty Lethal some of its most human moments — which matters in a film that occasionally forgets its characters are people and not just bodies to be choreographed.

Lana Condor — who earned a devoted global fanbase with the To All the Boys franchise and has been methodically expanding her range ever since — brings watchable energy to a role that the screenplay does not entirely earn. She is, like her co-stars, operating above the material.

And then there is Uma Thurman.

The Uma Thurman Problem

Here is where Pretty Lethal commits its most baffling creative sin. Uma Thurman — Oscar-nominated actress, Pulp Fiction icon, the woman who spent two Kill Bill films redefining what a female action lead could look like — is underutilised to a degree that borders on inexplicable.

She is present. She is watchable. She is, as she tends to be, magnetically compelling in even the quietest scenes. But Pretty Lethal seems almost afraid to deploy her fully — to let her occupy the space the film so desperately needs a commanding adult presence to fill. In a story about five young women learning to survive in a violent world, Thurman’s role as a figure of experience and authority should be the film’s dramatic spine. Instead, it functions more like a guest appearance.

It is the kind of casting decision that makes more sense as a marketing strategy than as a storytelling one. Thurman’s name on the poster signals a certain kind of film — fierce, female-driven, unapologetically action-oriented. The film itself does not quite live up to that signal.

What Works — and What Doesn’t

When Pretty Lethal leans into its action sequences, it finds genuine momentum. The choreography — blending ballet vocabulary with combat violence in the way the premise demands — is the film’s most distinctive creative contribution, and the sequences that commit fully to that fusion are worth the admission price alone.

Where it stumbles is in its pacing and its screenplay, which cannot quite decide whether it wants to be a slick genre exercise or a character study with something serious to say about the exploitation baked into elite performance culture. Films can be both. Pretty Lethal is neither, fully.

The Hungarian gangster antagonists are underwritten to the point of abstraction — threatening in the kinetic sequences, but lacking the menace or texture that would make the danger feel genuinely urgent. And without that urgency, the stakes remain frustratingly theoretical.

The Verdict

Amazon Prime Video has released Pretty Lethal into a crowded streaming landscape, and there is enough here — the action choreography, the committed performances, the Ziegler showcase — to make it a watchable evening’s entertainment. For audiences who simply want kinetic energy and a female ensemble doing impressive physical work, it delivers at a serviceable level.

But for anyone who sees what Pretty Lethal could have been — a John Wick-meets-Black Swan hybrid with Uma Thurman at its commanding centre — the gap between potential and execution will linger long after the credits roll.

Maddie Ziegler deserves a better vehicle. So does Lana Condor. So does Iris Apatow.

And so, most of all, does Uma Thurman.

After two years without releasing a brand-new solo track, Beyoncé has returned with a surprise release that is already sending fans into detective mode.

The music icon recently unveiled “Morning Dew (Donk),” marking her first fresh song in years and immediately sparking widespread speculation about what could be coming next. The release has also launched a 60-day countdown tied to the upcoming 20th-anniversary celebration of B’Day, the landmark album that helped cement Beyoncé’s place among the most influential artists of the 21st century.

For fans, the timing feels too significant to ignore.

A Surprise Return After Two Years

Beyoncé is no stranger to unexpected releases. Throughout her career, she has mastered the art of keeping audiences guessing, often unveiling music and projects with little warning.

The arrival of “Morning Dew (Donk)” continues that tradition. While details surrounding the track remain limited, its release has instantly reignited discussions across social media platforms and fan communities worldwide.

The song represents Beyoncé’s first newly released solo material in approximately two years, making it one of the most anticipated music moments of the year.

Industry observers note that whenever Beyoncé releases new music, it tends to generate attention far beyond the music business, influencing fashion, culture, streaming trends, and social media conversations.

The Legacy of B’Day

The release also carries special significance because of its connection to B’Day, one of the defining albums of Beyoncé’s career.

Originally released in 2006, the album produced several major hits and showcased the artist’s growing confidence as a solo performer. Songs from the project helped shape pop and R&B music during the mid-2000s and remain fan favorites nearly two decades later.

As the 20th anniversary approaches, many listeners are revisiting the album’s impact and celebrating how it contributed to Beyoncé’s evolution from chart-topping singer to global cultural icon.

The newly launched countdown has only intensified speculation that additional surprises may be on the horizon.

Fans Believe Something Bigger Is Coming

Almost immediately after the song’s release, online communities began searching for clues about a possible larger project.

Some fans believe “Morning Dew (Donk)” could be the beginning of a new album campaign. Others suspect it may be connected to an expanded anniversary edition of B’Day featuring unreleased material, remastered tracks, or exclusive content.

Neither Beyoncé nor her team have publicly confirmed details about future releases, but the countdown’s presence has encouraged theories that more announcements could arrive in the coming weeks.

Given Beyoncé’s history of carefully planned rollouts, speculation is unlikely to slow down anytime soon.

A Career Defined by Reinvention

Few artists have demonstrated the longevity and influence of Beyoncé.

From her early success with Destiny’s Child to her record-breaking solo career, she has consistently reinvented herself while remaining one of the most respected figures in entertainment.

Albums such as Dangerously in Love, Lemonade, Renaissance, and B’Day have demonstrated her ability to evolve creatively while maintaining widespread commercial success.

Her influence extends beyond music, shaping conversations in fashion, culture, business, and social issues.

The Music Industry Watches Closely

Whenever Beyoncé enters a new musical era, the entertainment industry pays attention.

Streaming platforms, record labels, concert promoters, and media organizations all recognize the enormous impact her releases can have on audience engagement and market trends.

That is why even a single surprise song release can trigger discussions about potential tours, deluxe albums, anniversary projects, and future collaborations.

What Happens Next?

For now, fans are enjoying “Morning Dew (Donk)” while eagerly counting down the days to the B’Day anniversary milestone.

Whether the track is a standalone release, part of a commemorative project, or the first glimpse of a larger musical chapter remains unknown.

What is clear, however, is that Beyoncé has once again captured the world’s attention with a single move — proving that even after decades at the top, she still knows exactly how to keep fans guessing.

Stephen Colbert vs Jimmy Kimmel at the Emmys 2026… Late-Night Giants Face Off in a Battle for TV’s Top Honor

The two veteran hosts earn major Emmy recognition, setting up a highly anticipated awards-season showdown between two of late night’s biggest names.

Late Show With Stephen Colbert Daily Global Diary - Authentic Global News

The 2026 Emmy Awards nominations have once again highlighted the enduring appeal of late-night television, with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel earning recognition after navigating one of the most competitive awards seasons in recent memory.

For both hosts, this year’s nominations represent more than another appearance on the Emmy ballot. They reflect years of adapting to changing audience habits, an increasingly digital media landscape, and intense competition from streaming platforms, podcasts, and online creators.

Colbert, who continues to host The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, has maintained his reputation for combining political commentary, celebrity interviews, and sharp satire. His ability to remain culturally relevant has helped the show continue attracting both viewers and awards attention despite significant shifts in late-night television.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel, the longtime face of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, once again demonstrated why he remains one of the industry’s most respected hosts. His blend of humor, emotional storytelling, and memorable celebrity moments has kept his program firmly in the Emmy conversation year after year.

Unlike previous seasons, however, this year’s nominations were far from guaranteed. The late-night television landscape has become increasingly fragmented, with audiences consuming entertainment across YouTube, streaming services, social media platforms, and on-demand content rather than traditional broadcast schedules.

That shift has forced established hosts to evolve while maintaining the qualities that originally made them successful. Industry analysts believe this adaptability played a key role in keeping both Colbert and Kimmel among the Television Academy’s preferred nominees.

Awards observers have described their recognition as “earned the hard way” because neither host benefited from an uncontested field. Instead, both faced strong competition from emerging personalities, innovative formats, and changing viewer preferences that continue to reshape television entertainment.

Beyond individual recognition, the nominations also underscore the continued relevance of late-night programming in American popular culture. While viewing habits have changed dramatically over the past decade, shows built around topical humor, celebrity interviews, and current events continue to hold an important place in the television ecosystem.

Produced by major broadcast networks, both programs have consistently delivered headline-making interviews, viral comedy segments, and cultural conversations that extend far beyond traditional television audiences through digital platforms.

The nominations arrive during another high-profile Emmy season, with prestige dramas, acclaimed comedies, and streaming originals dominating much of the awards conversation. Against that backdrop, recognition for long-running late-night programs stands as a reminder that consistency remains highly valued by Emmy voters.

Fans have welcomed the nominations across social media, with many praising both hosts for maintaining their unique styles while adapting to the rapidly changing entertainment industry. The acknowledgment also reinforces the continued strength of established television personalities in an era increasingly defined by digital-first creators.

As the countdown to the Emmy Awards ceremony continues, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel now have another opportunity to add to their impressive awards legacies. Whether either host ultimately takes home the trophy remains to be seen, but their nominations alone represent a significant achievement in one of television’s most competitive years.

For the Television Academy, this year’s selections send a clear message: experience, innovation, and staying power still matter—even in an entertainment world that never stops evolving.
