Sebastian Stan Opens Up About Finding Success in His 40s Says “I Needed to Grow Before I Could Handle It”
After years of playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, actor Sebastian Stan reflects on achieving critical acclaim later in life — admitting he “wasn’t ready” for fame in his twenties.
For Sebastian Stan, success didn’t come all at once — and that’s exactly how he prefers it.
In a candid conversation on Don Saladino’s Stronger Podcast, the 43-year-old actor opened up about his journey from Marvel superstardom to earning his first Oscar nomination earlier this year, sharing how patience and personal growth helped shape his career.
“I have to try to offer something different than before,” Stan said. “And I’ve never favored one role over another. The Marvel stuff — I’ll always, till the end of time, say it really helped me grow as a person and helped me grow as an actor.”
From Bucky Barnes to Oscar Nominee
Stan, who became a household name for his role as Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier in Marvel’s Captain America films and the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, has spent the last decade redefining himself beyond superhero movies.

He credits his years in the Marvel Studios family — working alongside icons like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans — for teaching him discipline and humility.
“It taught me relationships,” he explained. “It was a business, it was a family, and it gave me a sense of belonging. But that was only step one for me.”
Stan’s recent work in acclaimed projects such as I, Tonya, Pam & Tommy, A Different Man, and The Apprentice has earned him newfound respect from critics and audiences alike — culminating in his first Oscar nomination, a milestone he calls “humbling.”
“I Needed to Grow”
Despite being in Hollywood for over two decades, Stan says his deeper artistic fulfillment didn’t come until his 40s.
“This is where I’m finally now,” he said. “And I’m lucky that it’s happening in my 40s, and it didn’t happen earlier for me. I look at these young guys like Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler — they’re doing stuff that I don’t think I could have done at their age. I just wasn’t there yet.”

He added with a smile, “I’m amazed at where they are at this point. I go, ‘Wow, where’s that guy going to be at 40?’ But for me, I needed to grow.”
Stan’s reflections highlight a growing trend in Hollywood: the celebration of late bloomers — actors who find their creative peak later in life after years of grinding, self-doubt, and reinvention.
The Art of Reinvention
Stan’s post-Marvel career has showcased his versatility and range. His portrayal of Jeff Gillooly in I, Tonya and Tommy Lee in Pam & Tommy proved he could transform completely, both physically and emotionally.
In his most recent project, A Different Man, he earned widespread acclaim for his haunting performance as a disfigured man navigating identity and obsession. Critics have called it his “career-best work,” while director Aaron Schimberg praised Stan’s fearlessness.
“Sebastian doesn’t just act — he dismantles himself,” Schimberg said in an interview with Variety. “He’s not afraid of vulnerability or ugliness, and that’s what makes his performances unforgettable.”
Grounded and Grateful
Despite his success, Stan remains deeply grounded. In past interviews, he’s spoken openly about therapy, self-acceptance, and learning to balance ambition with patience.
“Fame is strange,” he said in an earlier chat with GQ. “You spend so much time chasing something, and when it finally comes, you realize the only thing that matters is how you feel about yourself.”
He credits his Romanian roots and upbringing in New York for keeping him centered. “I’m grateful it all happened this way,” he said. “I’ve had time to make mistakes, to grow up, to figure out who I am. I don’t think I could’ve handled fame at 25.”
The Next Chapter
Looking ahead, Stan shows no signs of slowing down. With The Apprentice and other projects in development, he continues to seek roles that challenge him — emotionally, intellectually, and physically.
“I don’t ever want to get too comfortable,” he said. “The moment you stop being afraid, you stop growing. And I’m still growing.”
For an actor once defined by his metal arm and superhero stoicism, Sebastian Stan’s latest chapter is defined by something far more powerful — authenticity.

‘Onwards and Sideways’ Unveils First Images of Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans’ Powerful New Drama
The emotional film follows two lives transformed by unexpected diagnoses and is set to make its world premiere at TIFF.
A moving new drama is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and its first official images are already drawing attention for their emotional depth.
Titled Onwards and Sideways, the film stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as two individuals whose lives are transformed after receiving diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing solely on grief, the story promises to balance heartfelt moments with humor, resilience and hope.
Helming the project is acclaimed filmmaker John Madden, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning classic Shakespeare in Love. The screenplay comes from Paul Mayhew-Archer, a celebrated British writer whose own experiences with Parkinson’s have brought authenticity to the script.

According to the filmmakers, Onwards and Sideways is designed to explore how life can continue with meaning even after a difficult diagnosis. Instead of presenting a conventional medical drama, the film examines friendship, resilience, vulnerability and the unexpected connections that emerge during life’s most challenging moments.
Joining Linney and Ifans is an accomplished supporting cast featuring Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear, both known for delivering nuanced performances across film, television and theatre.

The newly released images offer an early glimpse into the film’s intimate storytelling, capturing quiet moments between characters as they navigate uncertainty with compassion and humor. While the subject matter is undeniably serious, the visuals suggest a story that celebrates humanity rather than focusing exclusively on illness.
For Laura Linney, the project marks another emotionally rich role in a career filled with acclaimed performances in films and television. Rhys Ifans, meanwhile, continues to showcase his remarkable versatility by stepping into a character facing profound personal change.
With John Madden behind the camera, expectations are naturally high. His previous work has demonstrated a remarkable ability to combine emotional storytelling with memorable performances, making Onwards and Sideways one of the more anticipated premieres at this year’s festival.
As conversations surrounding Parkinson’s disease continue to grow globally, the film arrives with the potential to spark meaningful dialogue while reminding audiences that compassion, laughter and human connection remain powerful forces in the face of adversity.
Whether it emerges as an awards-season contender remains to be seen, but Onwards and Sideways is already positioning itself as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most emotionally compelling premieres.
