“Before nepo babies were charming…” Sofia Coppola recalls being mocked as the actress who ‘ruined Godfather’ at emotional MoMA tribute
Honored at MoMA’s Film Benefit, Sofia Coppola reflects on her rocky beginnings, industry criticism, and the few people who believed she had something meaningful to say.
It was an evening filled with elegance, emotion and sharp humour as Sofia Coppola stepped onto the stage of the Museum of Modern Art in New York for its 2025 Film Benefit presented by Chanel. Surrounded by collaborators, mentors and family, the acclaimed filmmaker used the moment not to celebrate her success — but to look back at a time when Hollywood dismissed her before she even began.
Coppola recalled that when she entered her 20s, she was simply known as the daughter of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.
But she didn’t sugarcoat the experience.
With a mix of wit and honesty, she told the audience:
“This was before nepo babies were charming… and most of them ended up in rehab.”
“I was the amateur actress who single-handedly ruined the Godfather films.”
The crowd — filled with actors and industry insiders — erupted in laughter. But behind the joke was a very real memory.

Coppola appeared in all three Godfather films, most notoriously as Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III, a performance that was heavily criticized and haunted her early career.
A room full of familiar faces — and respect
The audience that night included some of Coppola’s closest creative partners and friends:
- Bill Murray
- Elle Fanning
- Josh Hartnett
- Jason Schwartzman
- Roman Coppola
- Former super-agent Michael Ovitz
- MoMA chief curator Rajendra Roy
Even Kirsten Dunst and her father Francis appeared via video messages, adding emotional weight to the night.

Coppola’s brother Roman and cousin Schwartzman presented her with the honor — a full-circle moment for a filmmaker whose career began under the shadow of family legacy.
“Most people didn’t think I had something to say” — but a few did
Reflecting on the skepticism she faced early on, Coppola shared:
“Most people didn’t think I had something to say that mattered, but I found a few that did.”
She thanked:
- her longtime agent
- her recurring troupe of actors
- her creative collaborators
- and of course, her father
She also credited Francis with being “the best film teacher,” introducing her to world cinema and always welcoming his children onto his film sets.
This encouragement led her to write and direct the haunting and poetic The Virgin Suicides, followed by her Oscar-winning masterpiece Lost in Translation, the vibrant and controversial Marie Antoinette, The Bling Ring, and her recent Marc Jacobs documentary Marc by Sofia.
Saluting the women who made her believe
Coppola ended her speech with gratitude for the women who carved pathways before her.
She celebrated Jane Campion, describing how the director showed her that women could be “strong, respected auteurs.”
And she recalled advice from legendary actress Anjelica Huston:
“Not everyone’s going to love you. Don’t waste your time on the people who don’t.”
Those words, Coppola said, guided her during the years when criticism felt personal and overwhelming.
From ‘ruining Godfather’ to redefining modern filmmaking
The story of Sofia Coppola’s career is one of resilience, reinvention and understated brilliance. She moved from being mocked as an inexperienced actress to becoming one of the most recognized creative voices in contemporary cinema.
MoMA’s tribute wasn’t just a celebration of her films —
it was a recognition that she built her legacy on her own terms.
And perhaps, as she joked during her speech, the era of “nepo baby charm” may have arrived too late for her —
but Sofia Coppola’s work has long transcended her last name.

‘Scrubs’ Season 2 Brings Major Cast Changes With Ava Bunn’s Promotion and Two Exits
The upcoming season will introduce a new dynamic as Ava Bunn takes on a bigger part following the departures of Joel Kim Booster and X Mayo.
The halls of Sacred Heart are getting some new energy as Scrubs prepares for its second season, with major cast changes announced ahead of the show’s return.
Actress Ava Bunn has officially been promoted to a series regular for Season 2, marking a significant step forward for the rising performer. Meanwhile, Joel Kim Booster and X Mayo will not be returning as regular cast members for the upcoming season.
The casting update comes as the beloved medical comedy continues its new chapter while maintaining connections to the original series. Fan favorites Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison are all set to return, bringing back the chemistry that made the original show a television favorite.
Bunn’s promotion highlights the show’s commitment to developing its newer characters and expanding the world of Scrubs. Her increased role in Season 2 suggests that audiences will see more of her character’s journey as the series continues balancing fresh faces with familiar personalities.

The departures of Booster and Mayo represent a shift in the show’s ensemble. Both actors brought their own comedic styles to the revival, and their exits will likely lead to changes in the storytelling approach for the upcoming episodes.

Originally created by Bill Lawrence, Scrubs became one of the most popular medical comedies of the 2000s by blending workplace humor with emotional storytelling. The series stood out for its unique mix of comedy, friendship, and realistic moments surrounding life in a hospital.
The revival has attempted to capture the spirit of the original while introducing a new generation of characters. Bringing back Braff, Chalke and Faison allows longtime viewers to reconnect with familiar personalities, while younger cast members help push the story into new territory.
Season 2 is expected to continue exploring the challenges faced by medical professionals, combining the show’s trademark humor with heartfelt moments. The balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling remains one of the biggest factors behind the revival’s appeal.
While fans will certainly notice the absence of Booster and Mayo, the promotion of Ava Bunn signals that the creative team is confident in the direction of the series moving forward.
With returning stars, evolving characters and a renewed focus on its ensemble, Scrubs Season 2 is shaping up to be another important chapter in the franchise’s long-running legacy.
