Taco Bell Removes Lettuce After Taylor Farms Link to Midwest Cyclospora Outbreak
Shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to select Taco Bell restaurants has been linked to a regional Cyclospora outbreak under investigation by U.S. health authorities.

A food safety investigation unfolding across the United States has placed Taco Bell at the center of a growing public health concern after shredded iceberg lettuce served at select restaurants was linked to a regional outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 7,000 Cyclospora cases have either been confirmed or remain under investigation nationwide since May 1. Health officials say confirmed infections are already more than six times higher than those reported during the same period last year, with at least 141 people hospitalized.

The outbreak connected to Taco Bell is believed to be concentrated in the Midwestern United States, where contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms has emerged as the leading suspected source.

Hundreds of Cases Across Four States

The CDC has identified at least 400 confirmed illnesses associated with the regional outbreak spanning Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Investigators believe these are the states where the affected Taco Bell restaurants received the contaminated lettuce, although officials have not ruled out the possibility that the produce may have reached additional locations.

Health experts stress that investigations remain active and additional findings could expand the scope of the outbreak.

Michigan Becomes the Epicentre

Among the affected states, Michigan has reported the highest number of illnesses during the ongoing investigation.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has recorded more than 4,300 Cyclospora-related cases while interviewing over 1,000 individuals in an effort to trace the common source of infection.

Officials said lettuce and other salad greens consistently appeared during patient interviews. Although investigators cannot confirm that every reported illness originated from the same exposure, they noted that the unusually sharp rise in infections strongly indicates a single, widespread outbreak.

If confirmed, experts believe this could become the largest Cyclospora outbreak ever documented in the United States.

Taco Bell Removes Lettuce Nationwide

Responding to discussions with public health authorities, Taco Bell announced it has voluntarily removed the potentially affected shredded iceberg lettuce from restaurants in the impacted states.

The fast-food chain also confirmed that the ingredient supplied by the implicated vendor will be indefinitely removed from its nationwide supply chain and replaced with alternative supplies.

The company described the decision as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting customers while the investigation continues.

What Is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the digestive system after people consume contaminated food or water.

Unlike many foodborne illnesses, cyclosporiasis is not commonly spread from one person to another. Instead, outbreaks are frequently linked to fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs, berries, and vegetables that are eaten raw.

People infected with Cyclospora may experience symptoms including:

  • Watery diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite

Symptoms may persist for several weeks without proper treatment.

Taylor Farms Faces Fresh Scrutiny

The investigation has once again drawn attention to Taylor Farms, one of the largest fresh produce suppliers in the United States.

Although the company has not publicly commented on the latest findings, its products have previously been associated with major food safety investigations, including:

  • A 2024 E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions.
  • A 2013 Cyclospora outbreak involving contaminated lettuce.

Authorities have not announced any nationwide food recall, and investigators continue working to determine exactly how widely the affected produce was distributed.

Multiple Investigations Still Underway

Federal and state health agencies say several Cyclospora investigations are currently active across the country. Some involve the large Midwest outbreak, while others relate to isolated state clusters or individual cases that have yet to be connected.

Officials continue tracing supply chains and interviewing patients to determine whether additional restaurants, grocery stores, or distributors may have received contaminated produce.

Consumers who recently ate at Taco Bell restaurants in the affected states and develop persistent gastrointestinal symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly.

As investigators gather more evidence, health authorities say further updates are expected in the coming weeks.

FBI Director Kash Patel’s 3D-Printed Gun Gift Was ‘Displayed Proudly’… Then Destroyed Months Later by Australia’s Top Police Chief

Documents released under Australia’s Freedom of Information laws reveal the unusual gift was showcased in the Australian Federal Police commissioner’s office before being ordered destroyed after a leadership change.

Kash Patel's 3D-Printed Gun Gift to Australian Police Chief Destroyed After Leadership Change
A 3D-printed imitation pistol gifted by FBI Director Kash Patel to Australia's former police commissioner was later destroyed following advice from firearms authorities, according to newly released documents.

An unusual diplomatic gift exchanged between senior law enforcement officials has become the centre of public attention after newly released government documents revealed that a 3D-printed imitation pistol presented by Kash Patel, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was later destroyed on the orders of Australia’s new police commissioner.

The documents, released by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) under Freedom of Information (FOI) laws, provide an inside look at how the symbolic gift was initially celebrated before ultimately being discarded.

A Gift Presented During an Official Visit

According to the released records, Patel presented the display piece to former AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw during an official visit to Australia and New Zealand.

The item was described by the AFP as a “challenge coin display featuring a 3D-printed imitation pistol.”

Internal emails and text messages show that staff members viewed the gift as a noteworthy addition to the commissioner’s office.

One internal message described it as a “Director’s gift to the boss,” while another email noted that the display was “being displayed proudly in the commissioner’s office.”

Photographs accompanying the communications were withheld from the public release, with authorities citing concerns that publication could affect Australia’s international relations.

New Commissioner Ordered Its Destruction

The display remained in the commissioner’s office only briefly.

After Krissy Barrett assumed leadership of the AFP, she directed that the item be destroyed.

Before that decision was made, the imitation firearm was examined by the AFP’s forensic firearms specialists, who concluded that it was an inoperable replica rather than a functioning weapon.

However, based on advice from the ACT Firearms Registry, the display was ultimately destroyed.

The AFP later confirmed in its official gift register that the item had been disposed of following regulatory guidance.

Similar Incident Reported in New Zealand

The Australian case was not unique.

Reports from New Zealand indicate that local law enforcement agencies also received similar replica firearm displays from Patel during his visit.

Although those items were also presented as commemorative display stands, authorities reportedly chose to destroy them after assessments determined they could potentially be made operable under local firearms regulations.

The incidents highlight how differing national firearms laws can influence the treatment of ceremonial or replica items exchanged during official visits.

Another Gift: A Bottle of Bourbon

The FOI documents also reveal that Kershaw received a bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon during the visit.

Unlike the replica firearm display, the bourbon was approved for him to retain after his retirement because its declared value fell within the permitted gifting threshold.

Earlier reports suggested that similar commemorative bottles exchanged by FBI officials featured personalised engravings associated with Patel’s office.

Responding to previous media coverage, Ben Williamson, Assistant Director of the FBI, said commemorative gifts had long been part of official Bureau protocol and complied with applicable ethics guidelines.

He added that any personal gifts provided by Patel were paid for personally and followed established ethical standards.

Australia–US Law Enforcement Cooperation Continues

Despite the attention surrounding the destroyed gift, the visit itself focused on strengthening cooperation between Australian and American law enforcement agencies.

According to posts shared by the U.S. Embassy in Australia, Patel described Australia as a “reliable ally” and highlighted collaboration on issues including:

  • Combating transnational organised crime
  • Cybersecurity threats
  • International law enforcement cooperation
  • Emerging global security challenges

Former Commissioner Reece Kershaw also participated in discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

While the replica pistol has now become an unusual footnote in diplomatic history, the broader partnership between the FBI and the Australian Federal Police continues to focus on shared security priorities across the Indo-Pacific region.

Nolan Wells Timeline: Disappearance, Death Investigation and Key Developments Explained
Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells after his disappearance during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.

A Holiday Trip That Ended in Tragedy

What began as a Fourth of July celebration on Horn Island, a remote barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, has turned into an investigation drawing national attention.

The death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate and college football player, has left investigators working to reconstruct his final hours while his family continues to demand clarity and accountability.

Authorities have not yet announced a final cause of death, and several aspects of the case remain under investigation.

July 3–4: A Familiar Holiday Trip

According to family members, Wells graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 2025 and had recently enrolled at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he joined the football program as a wide receiver.

On the evening of July 3, Wells reportedly shared dinner with his family before leaving to spend the holiday weekend with friends.

The group travelled by boat to Horn Island, a destination Wells had reportedly visited several times in the past.

However, when the group returned to the mainland on July 4, Wells was no longer with them. His family says they were informed of his disappearance later that night and immediately reported him missing.

July 5: Search Efforts Intensify

The following morning, Wells’ family turned to social media, appealing for information that might help locate him.

According to his mother, the family recovered Wells’ mobile phone but found no photographs or videos from the day’s trip—something she described as unusual given her son’s habit of documenting outings with friends.

Meanwhile, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department launched a coordinated search with assistance from the United States Coast Guard and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.

Volunteer organisations, including the United Cajun Navy, also joined search operations.

Investigators interviewed witnesses while search teams combed the island and surrounding waters.

July 6: Body Recovered Near Shoreline

The search ended tragically when authorities recovered a body believed to be Wells near the shoreline.

Officials stated there were no obvious signs of external physical trauma, but the Jackson County Coroner’s Office requested a comprehensive autopsy through the state medical examiner due to the condition of the body.

Authorities said additional examinations, including toxicology testing, would be required before determining the official cause and manner of death.

Questions Continue to Grow

Shortly after the recovery, statements indicating that foul play was not immediately suspected generated significant public debate.

Online discussions intensified after photographs circulated showing Wells as the apparent only Black member of the group on the trip. Many commentators referenced Mississippi’s historical racial tensions and questioned whether every aspect of the case had been fully examined.

Law enforcement has repeatedly stated that investigators are following evidence rather than speculation and continue to interview witnesses and review available information.

Family Seeks Independent Review

Seeking additional transparency, Wells’ family retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump to represent them during the investigation.

Crump announced that an independent autopsy had been commissioned outside Mississippi to provide an additional medical assessment.

The family’s legal team has said they believe every possible avenue should be explored before any conclusions are reached.

Authorities Continue Collecting Evidence

Investigators have appealed to the public for original, unedited photographs and videos taken on Horn Island during the July 4 gathering, particularly any material that may show Wells or document reported altercations.

Officials have confirmed they are reviewing eyewitness accounts, digital evidence and online reports as part of the ongoing investigation.

The sheriff’s office has emphasised that establishing an accurate timeline requires careful analysis and that premature conclusions could hinder the investigation.

A Community Still Waiting for Answers

More than a week after Wells disappeared, several key questions remain unanswered, including why he did not return with the group, how he became separated from his friends, and what occurred during his final hours on Horn Island.

Family members continue to urge investigators to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry while remembering Wells not only as a promising football player, but as a beloved son, teammate and friend.

Until official forensic findings and investigative conclusions are released, the circumstances surrounding Nolan Wells’ death remain unresolved.

What began as a festive celebration quickly turned into a medical emergency as the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C. faced a severe heat-related crisis that reportedly left several attendees fighting for their lives.

The fair, organized as part of President Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 initiative, attracted large crowds eager to participate in patriotic celebrations, entertainment programs, food events, and family-friendly activities. However, soaring temperatures transformed the atmosphere from one of celebration to one of concern.

According to reports, emergency medical teams were called into action after numerous visitors experienced symptoms associated with extreme heat exposure. Several individuals reportedly suffered serious medical complications and were placed on life support as healthcare professionals worked to stabilize their conditions.

As temperatures continued to climb, event organizers made the decision to temporarily suspend fair operations on Friday. Officials cited public safety concerns and the need to protect attendees, staff members, and vendors from dangerous weather conditions.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as medical personnel rushed across the venue to assist those affected by the heat. Many attendees sought shelter in shaded areas, cooling stations, and air-conditioned facilities as emergency announcements echoed throughout the fairgrounds.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of hosting large outdoor gatherings during periods of extreme weather. Experts have repeatedly warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and potentially life-threatening heatstroke, particularly among children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

The Freedom 250 celebrations, designed to commemorate America’s approaching 250th anniversary, have featured multiple events across the country. The health emergency at the Great American State Fair, however, has shifted attention toward preparedness measures and emergency response planning at major public events.

Local authorities and medical officials continue to monitor those hospitalized following the incident. While organizers have emphasized that attendee safety remains their top priority, questions are being raised about whether additional precautions could have helped reduce the impact of the intense heatwave.

As Washington, D.C. and several other regions of the United States continue to experience unusually high temperatures, public health experts are urging residents and visitors alike to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heat-related illness appear.

The incident serves as a stark reminder that extreme weather can quickly transform even the most anticipated public celebrations into serious emergencies.
