An unusual diplomatic gift exchanged between senior law enforcement officials has become the centre of public attention after newly released government documents revealed that a 3D-printed imitation pistol presented by Kash Patel, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was later destroyed on the orders of Australia’s new police commissioner.

Internal emails and text messages show that staff members viewed the gift as a noteworthy addition to the commissioner’s office.

One internal message described it as a “Director’s gift to the boss,” while another email noted that the display was “being displayed proudly in the commissioner’s office.”

Photographs accompanying the communications were withheld from the public release, with authorities citing concerns that publication could affect Australia’s international relations.

New Commissioner Ordered Its Destruction

The display remained in the commissioner’s office only briefly.

After Krissy Barrett assumed leadership of the AFP, she directed that the item be destroyed.

Before that decision was made, the imitation firearm was examined by the AFP’s forensic firearms specialists, who concluded that it was an inoperable replica rather than a functioning weapon.

However, based on advice from the ACT Firearms Registry, the display was ultimately destroyed.

The FOI documents also reveal that Kershaw received a bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon during the visit.

Unlike the replica firearm display, the bourbon was approved for him to retain after his retirement because its declared value fell within the permitted gifting threshold.

Earlier reports suggested that similar commemorative bottles exchanged by FBI officials featured personalised engravings associated with Patel’s office.

Responding to previous media coverage, Ben Williamson, Assistant Director of the FBI, said commemorative gifts had long been part of official Bureau protocol and complied with applicable ethics guidelines.

He added that any personal gifts provided by Patel were paid for personally and followed established ethical standards.
