The impeccably tailored suits remain, but the man wearing them has changed beyond recognition.

By the conclusion of The Gentlemen Season 2, Eddie Horniman is no longer the reluctant aristocrat who accidentally inherited an estate built above a criminal empire. He has become colder, more ambitious and capable of ordering a level of violence that would have horrified his former self.

Actor and co-executive producer Theo James has now discussed the finale’s bloody final moments and how Eddie’s transformation creates a far more dangerous foundation for the already-confirmed third season.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, James described the second chapter as a deeper and darker expansion of the criminal world created by Guy Ritchie.

Eddie Horniman finally embraces the darkness

When viewers first met Eddie, he wanted to remove the criminal organisation operating beneath his family estate. By Season 2, he is no longer searching for an exit. He wants to expand the business and prove that he deserves to lead it.

The new episodes take Eddie and Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario, beyond the English countryside and into a larger international operation in Italy.

Eddie begins using both sides of his identity—the respectable Duke of Halstead and the increasingly ruthless criminal strategist—to acquire greater influence. The more power he gains, however, the less control he appears to have over the person he is becoming.

That moral decline accelerates after Eddie marries Bella, played by Benedetta Porcaroli, only to lose her in a deadly plane explosion during their honeymoon.

Bella’s death changes the emotional direction of the season. Eddie’s ambition is quickly replaced by grief, rage and a relentless demand for revenge.

Who was really responsible for Bella’s death?

Eddie initially believes Bobby Glass, portrayed by Ray Winstone, ordered the attack. Acting on that assumption, he arranges for Bobby to be killed in prison.

He soon discovers that Bobby was not behind the plot and rushes with Susie to prevent the assassination. Bobby survives, but Eddie’s willingness to order the killing without knowing the full truth reveals how recklessly violent he has become.

The investigation eventually leads to Gospel John, the Bible-quoting criminal who wanted revenge against Eddie’s brother Freddy Horniman.

The most painful revelation is that Freddy, played by Daniel Ings, knew about Gospel John’s plan and helped him. His resentment over losing the family title and inheritance to Eddie had been growing since the first season.

Freddy may not have personally killed Bella, but his choices allowed the conspiracy to move forward.

The blood-soaked final scene explained

The finale places Eddie, Freddy and Gospel John inside one horrifying confrontation.

Eddie beats his brother but stops short of shooting him. Instead, he reveals that Gospel John is tied up inside a van alongside a chainsaw. Eddie then forces Freddy to enter the vehicle and decide who will survive.

When the doors reopen, Freddy emerges covered in blood and holding Gospel John’s severed head. Eddie watches calmly and lights a cigar.

It is a shocking image, but the blood is not the most unsettling part. The real horror comes from Eddie’s composure.

He does not kill Gospel John himself. Instead, he psychologically punishes Freddy by forcing him to carry out the execution. In doing so, Eddie makes his brother live with the consequences of his betrayal.

According to Netflix Tudum, the scene is intended to raise a larger question: Has Eddie lost control, or is he deliberately transforming himself into the ruthless leader he believes the criminal empire requires?

Why Eddie allows Freddy to live

Despite Freddy’s involvement in the conspiracy, Eddie chooses not to kill his brother.

That decision suggests a trace of family loyalty remains beneath Eddie’s increasingly hardened exterior. It may also be a calculated punishment. By allowing Freddy to live after forcing him to kill Gospel John, Eddie leaves his brother carrying the emotional and physical consequences of what happened.

The ending also ensures that the toxic relationship between the Horniman brothers can continue into Season 3. Freddy’s resentment, guilt and fear could make him either more loyal to Eddie—or even more dangerous.

Eddie and Susie enter uncertain territory

The relationship between Eddie and Susie remains one of the show’s most compelling elements. They understand one another, protect each other and share an obvious emotional connection, but neither is comfortable operating beneath the other.

Season 2 brings them closer while also making their partnership more volatile. Susie sees the ambition that drives Eddie, but the finale leaves her facing a man who may no longer recognise any boundary he is unwilling to cross.

Eddie ends the season more powerful and independent than before. He is also grieving, unpredictable and increasingly comfortable using cruelty as a leadership tool.

Season 3 will therefore have to explore whether Susie can continue working beside him—or whether she will eventually be forced to protect herself from him.

What Theo James and Guy Ritchie are planning for Season 3

Netflix confirmed The Gentlemen Season 3 before the second season premiered. Although detailed plot information has not been announced, the finale establishes several clear directions for the story.

Eddie must deal with his damaged relationship with Freddy, his uneasy position within the Glass organisation and the consequences of becoming a more aggressive criminal leader.

The series has already expanded from an underground cannabis operation on an English estate to international dealings in Italy. Ritchie has indicated that the show’s world and ambition will continue growing, suggesting that the third season could push Eddie and Susie further into global organised crime.

The biggest mystery is no longer whether Eddie can survive that world. It is whether anything recognisable will remain of him after he conquers it.

Is Meghan Markle joining ‘The Gentlemen’?

The conversation surrounding Season 3 has also been dominated by reports involving Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan, who starred as Rachel Zane in Suits before stepping away from acting, was reportedly in discussions about a possible role in the next season. However, no casting agreement has been officially announced by Netflix.

James appeared surprised by how widely the speculation travelled.

“It’s fascinating how those reports exploded that much, and how intrigued people are,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, while reflecting on the cultural attention surrounding Meghan.

In another interview, he jokingly suggested that Sarah Ferguson would appear as his love interest before describing the Meghan reports as largely “hot air.”

For now, Meghan’s involvement remains an unconfirmed rumour. Neither Netflix nor her representatives have announced that she has joined the series.

Season 3 now has a very different Eddie

The first season asked whether Eddie could escape the criminal world. The second asked whether he secretly enjoyed it.

That question has now been answered.

Eddie does not merely understand the business—he wants to control it. The finale’s unforgettable last scene confirms that he is willing to manipulate, punish and kill to protect what he has built.

Season 3 will begin with Eddie appearing stronger than ever. But after losing Bella and brutalising his own brother, the cost of that power may prove far greater than he understands.
