The Wrong Paris review 5 reasons Netflix’s Bachelor-style romcom misses the mark
Despite Miranda Cosgrove’s charm, this Hallmark-lite Netflix romcom struggles with flat chemistry, awkward edits, and an uninspired script.
When Netflix announced The Wrong Paris, many expected it to be another breezy background romcom in the vein of The Hallmark Channel, sprinkled with the satirical flair of The Bachelor. Instead, what audiences got was a confusing mix of cliché tropes, lackluster direction, and a romantic setup that never quite sparks.
The film stars Miranda Cosgrove, best known for her Nickelodeon fame on iCarly, as Dawn, a small-town girl with dreams bigger than her bank account. Dawn’s plan is simple: join a reality dating show to make quick money, then return to her art school ambitions in Paris. But in true romcom fashion, nothing goes as planned.
1. A promising setup that fizzles out
On paper, the premise works. Dawn is persuaded by her sister Emily (played by Emilija Baranac of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) to sign up for The Honeypot, a thinly veiled parody of The Bachelor. The twist? Instead of jetting off to the romantic city of Paris, France, Dawn finds herself in Paris, Texas.
What could have been a fun satire of reality television turns into a Hallmark-lite storyline that’s more predictable than playful. Even Yvonne Orji, from HBO’s acclaimed series Insecure, feels underutilized as the show’s plucky producer.

2. Chemistry that never takes off
Romantic comedies live or die on the chemistry between leads. Unfortunately, Dawn’s pairing with ranch owner Trey McAllen III, played by Pierson Fodé, falls flat. Trey, written as a Texas cowboy with a Matthew McConaughey-style drawl, never feels like more than a caricature.
The two share a few witty exchanges, but genuine sparks are missing. The script pushes them together through contrived situations—fixing fences, horse rides, lingering looks—but the romance feels forced, more like a box to tick than a relationship to believe in.
3. Netflix’s editing problem
One of the biggest complaints is the sloppy editing. Scenes cut abruptly, lines nearly clip off, and at times the camera work feels like it’s shot in iPhone Portrait Mode. The inconsistent framing pulls viewers out of the story, reminding them they’re watching a budget romcom rather than losing themselves in the fantasy.
For a streamer that prides itself on sleek production values, this roughness stands out in all the wrong ways.
4. Supporting cast wasted
The ensemble of contestants had potential to parody reality TV stereotypes. We get the princess (Madeleine Arthur), the muscly badass (Veronica Long), the awkward nerd (Christin Park), the Christian girl with baby fever (Hannah Stocking), and the influencer (Madison Pettis). Yet instead of leaning into the absurdity, these characters remain shallow sketches.
It’s a shame, because the film could have used their storylines to lampoon the artificial drama of shows like The Bachelor. Instead, it settles for predictable one-liners and staged catfights.

5. A regressive message disguised as romance
The biggest misstep comes at the end. Dawn begins as a fiercely independent character, determined to pursue art school despite financial struggles. But the script pivots into her sacrificing that dream for love—a wealthy cowboy willing to pay her way.
At a time when audiences are craving empowering stories, this feels tone-deaf. Instead of a romcom about chasing both love and ambition, The Wrong Paris suggests women should trade dreams for romance.
The verdict
The Wrong Paris had the ingredients for a quirky Netflix romcom: a mistaken location, a strong female lead, a parody of reality TV. But with weak chemistry, uneven pacing, and a lack of conviction, it never rises above mediocrity.
Those looking for easy background entertainment might let it play while scrolling their phones. But if you want sparks, heart, or even Hallmark-level charm, you’ll have to keep searching.

A Celebration at Madison Square Garden

Edinburgh Film Festival Chief Reflects on Surprise Success and a New Chapter for the Event
An unexpected crowd-pleaser and the lasting influence of Robert Redford are helping shape the festival’s evolving identity as it enters a promising new era.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) is entering a new chapter with confidence, ambition, and a renewed commitment to discovering fresh talent. At the center of that vision is festival director Paul Ridd, who believes that original voices—not established intellectual property—are what continue to make cinema exciting.
Speaking about this year’s edition, Ridd described the competition slate as one of the strongest he has seen during his tenure. The lineup reflects a growing appetite for bold storytelling and emerging filmmakers, even as much of the wider entertainment industry remains focused on franchise-driven content.
For Ridd, the festival’s identity has always been rooted in championing new perspectives. While major studios continue to invest heavily in recognizable brands and sequels, Edinburgh has doubled down on supporting filmmakers whose stories might otherwise struggle to find a platform.
One of the biggest surprises in recent memory has been the remarkable response to “Obsession.” Reflecting on the film’s impact, Ridd admitted that its popularity exceeded expectations.
“I did not see that coming,” he acknowledged, highlighting how unpredictable audience reactions can still be in an era increasingly driven by algorithms and market forecasts.
Ridd sees parallels between Edinburgh’s mission and the principles that helped make Sundance a global force. In a film industry often dominated by commercial priorities, festivals remain one of the few spaces where risk-taking creativity can thrive.
The discussion comes at a fascinating moment for the festival circuit. While some major Hollywood studios have scaled back their traditional festival presence, independent productions and international films continue to attract strong interest from audiences, critics, and distributors.

According to Ridd, this shift has opened new opportunities for regional filmmaking communities, particularly in Scotland. The country’s film sector has experienced significant growth in recent years, producing a wave of talent that is gaining recognition far beyond national borders.
From emerging directors to breakthrough screenwriters, Scottish cinema is enjoying what many observers describe as a golden period. Increased investment, stronger production infrastructure, and international exposure have all contributed to the momentum.

Ridd believes the festival has an important role to play in sustaining that growth. Rather than chasing celebrity headlines alone, Edinburgh aims to provide a platform where new filmmakers can connect with audiences, industry professionals, and potential collaborators.
The strategy appears to be working. As global film festivals compete for relevance in an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape, Edinburgh has carved out a distinctive identity by focusing on discovery rather than familiarity.
For many filmmakers, that approach can make all the difference between remaining unnoticed and finding an audience.
As this year’s festival unfolds, the combination of fresh talent, unexpected success stories, and reflections on the legacy of figures like Robert Redford highlights a simple but powerful truth: cinema’s future may still belong to those willing to take creative risks.

Lena Dunham’s Surprise Football Quip at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Event Has Everyone Talking
What began as a lighthearted joke quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the star-studded celebration, leaving guests amused and social media buzzing.
Even before the wedding itself became the center of global attention, celebrations surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were already generating headlines.
Now, one reportedly humorous moment involving writer, actress, and filmmaker Lena Dunham has become a major talking point among fans and entertainment observers.
According to reports from the wedding festivities, Dunham made a playful and provocative joke about football during a pre-wedding gathering attended by friends and guests close to the couple. The comment, delivered in her characteristic comedic style, quickly attracted attention and sparked conversation online.
Dunham, who has been a longtime friend of Swift, is known for her candid personality and willingness to push boundaries with her humor. Over the years, the creator of the acclaimed television series Girls has built a reputation for blending sharp cultural observations with self-deprecating wit.

That reputation appeared to be on full display during the wedding celebrations.
While the reported remark was intended as a joke, reactions across social media varied, with some finding it amusing and others debating its broader implications. Such responses are not unusual when it comes to Dunham, whose comments and creative work have frequently generated discussion throughout her career.
The attention surrounding the joke also reflects the extraordinary level of public interest in Swift and Kelce’s relationship.
Since the pair became one of the most talked-about celebrity couples in the world, nearly every aspect of their relationship has attracted media coverage. From football stadium appearances and concert moments to engagement rumors and wedding celebrations, the couple has remained firmly in the spotlight.
Their wedding festivities have proven no exception.
Friends, family members, and celebrity guests attending the celebrations have become subjects of intense public interest, with fans eager to learn details about the event and the personalities involved.

Dunham’s presence was particularly notable because of her longstanding friendship with Swift. The two have publicly supported each other for years, appearing together at events and sharing mutual admiration for each other’s creative work.
As a result, many fans expected Dunham to play a meaningful role in the celebrations.
The incident also highlights how celebrity weddings have increasingly become cultural events that extend far beyond the ceremony itself. In today’s social media-driven landscape, even a single joke, speech, or candid moment can quickly become a headline.
For Swift and Kelce, however, the focus remains on the milestone they are celebrating.
The singer-songwriter, whose influence spans music, business, and popular culture, and the NFL star, one of football’s most recognizable athletes, continue to captivate audiences around the world.
Meanwhile, Dunham’s reported quip has added another memorable chapter to a wedding celebration already filled with high-profile guests, fashion moments, and unexpected surprises.
Whether viewed as a harmless joke or simply another example of Dunham’s trademark humor, the comment succeeded in doing one thing: ensuring that people were still talking long after the laughter faded.
