“You Don’t Have to Push Out a Baby to Push Humanity Forward”: Tracee Ellis Ross Moves the Room at Ebony Power 100 Gala
At the Ebony Power 100 Gala in Los Angeles, Tracee Ellis Ross was celebrated as Pathbreaker of the Year — alongside icons like Shaquille O’Neal, Teyana Taylor, and Ava DuVernay — in a night filled with power, purpose, and pride.
Under the glittering chandeliers of the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the annual Ebony Power 100 Gala unfolded on November 4, honoring those who shape the cultural, creative, and political heartbeat of America.
This year’s honorees included Tracee Ellis Ross, Teyana Taylor, Shaquille O’Neal, Iman, Olandria Carthen, and Lonnie Bunch III — each recognized for their lasting impact on music, media, business, and community empowerment.
Hosted by actress-comedian Robin Thede, the event was equal parts elegance and emotion. Performances by Ari Lennox and Lucky Daye filled the ballroom with energy, while the honorees’ heartfelt speeches reminded everyone that legacy is built not only on fame but also on fearless authenticity.

Reuniting with her Girlfriends co-stars — Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, and Golden Brooks — Ross spoke about redefining womanhood and leadership on her own terms.
“You do not have to push out a baby to help push humanity forward,” she told the crowd, her words sparking cheers across the room. It was a statement that resonated deeply with the night’s theme: breaking barriers and reclaiming narratives that have long been limited by societal expectations.
Ross, who has consistently used her platform to champion self-expression, empowerment, and textured-hair representation, reflected on her journey: “I’ve always believed that our stories — our true, unfiltered, joyful, messy stories — deserve to be seen and celebrated.”

Ava DuVernay Honors a Historian in a Time of Division
Director and activist Ava DuVernay, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, took the stage to present the Humanitarian Award to Lonnie Bunch III, the fourteenth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and its first African American leader.
“As he leads the Smithsonian, he stands at the center of a storm,” DuVernay said.
“Dark forces are moving against him — people who despise truth because it unmasks their myths. They call history divisive and honesty unpatriotic. But Dr. Bunch stands firm.”
Her tribute drew a standing ovation. “He refuses to let the story of America be stripped of its heart and its struggle and its grace,” DuVernay added. “Tonight, I want to thank Ebony for recognizing this hero who doesn’t walk red carpets or pose under spotlights, but fights every day for the soul of our shared story.”
A Night of Legacy and Love
For nearly eight decades, Ebony Magazine has celebrated Black excellence — from trailblazers in civil rights to innovators in fashion, sports, and the arts.
This year’s Power 100 continued that legacy, with attendees from across industries celebrating the magic of representation.
Sports legend Shaquille O’Neal accepted his award with characteristic humor and humility, while multi-talented artist Teyana Taylor reminded the audience that “dreams from Harlem can shake the world.”
The Cultural Pulse of Progress
The 2025 Ebony Power 100 wasn’t just an award show — it was a declaration.
It underscored how icons like Tracee Ellis Ross are redefining what success, womanhood, and power look like in today’s America.
Through courage, creativity, and unapologetic authenticity, Ross continues to prove that impact has no single mold — only purpose.
As the night closed, the words of Tracee Ellis Ross lingered in the ballroom — not as a quote for headlines, but as a call to action: to show up fully, live freely, and keep pushing humanity forward.

‘Onwards and Sideways’ Unveils First Images of Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans’ Powerful New Drama
The emotional film follows two lives transformed by unexpected diagnoses and is set to make its world premiere at TIFF.
A moving new drama is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and its first official images are already drawing attention for their emotional depth.
Titled Onwards and Sideways, the film stars Laura Linney and Rhys Ifans as two individuals whose lives are transformed after receiving diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease. Rather than focusing solely on grief, the story promises to balance heartfelt moments with humor, resilience and hope.
Helming the project is acclaimed filmmaker John Madden, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning classic Shakespeare in Love. The screenplay comes from Paul Mayhew-Archer, a celebrated British writer whose own experiences with Parkinson’s have brought authenticity to the script.

According to the filmmakers, Onwards and Sideways is designed to explore how life can continue with meaning even after a difficult diagnosis. Instead of presenting a conventional medical drama, the film examines friendship, resilience, vulnerability and the unexpected connections that emerge during life’s most challenging moments.
Joining Linney and Ifans is an accomplished supporting cast featuring Monica Dolan and Rory Kinnear, both known for delivering nuanced performances across film, television and theatre.

The newly released images offer an early glimpse into the film’s intimate storytelling, capturing quiet moments between characters as they navigate uncertainty with compassion and humor. While the subject matter is undeniably serious, the visuals suggest a story that celebrates humanity rather than focusing exclusively on illness.
For Laura Linney, the project marks another emotionally rich role in a career filled with acclaimed performances in films and television. Rhys Ifans, meanwhile, continues to showcase his remarkable versatility by stepping into a character facing profound personal change.
With John Madden behind the camera, expectations are naturally high. His previous work has demonstrated a remarkable ability to combine emotional storytelling with memorable performances, making Onwards and Sideways one of the more anticipated premieres at this year’s festival.
As conversations surrounding Parkinson’s disease continue to grow globally, the film arrives with the potential to spark meaningful dialogue while reminding audiences that compassion, laughter and human connection remain powerful forces in the face of adversity.
Whether it emerges as an awards-season contender remains to be seen, but Onwards and Sideways is already positioning itself as one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most emotionally compelling premieres.
