Natasha Lyonne’s Next Move Is a Risky One — An ’80s Boxing Film Called ‘Bambo’ That Gets Personal…

After AI experiments and a ‘Poker Face’ shake-up, Lyonne steps behind the camera again with a gritty father-daughter story set in Brooklyn’s bruised boxing world

Natasha Lyonne is set to write and direct ‘Bambo,’ an ’80s boxing drama following a father and daughter caught in the wreckage of ambition.

Natasha Lyonne isn’t slowing down — she’s shifting gears.

Fresh off announcing her feature directorial debut with the AI-driven film Uncanny Valley, the actress-turned-filmmaker has now lined up her next narrative feature, an ’80s-set boxing drama titled Bambo. And unlike her tech-forward debut, this one is rooted in sweat, ambition, and emotional fallout.

Set in Brooklyn during the rough-and-tumble 1980s, Bambo follows a hometown boxing promoter father who believes he can become the next Don King — and drags his young daughter into a chaotic orbit of tax evasion, cocaine-fueled dreams, race cars, and heartbreak along the way.

It’s a story about failure, obsession, and the cost of chasing mythic success — themes Lyonne knows well.

Writing, Directing, Producing — Lyonne Goes All In

Lyonne will write, direct, and produce Bambo, marking her second feature behind the camera. The film is being produced through her banner Animal Pictures, alongside Max Ferguson, with Craig Mazin producing for Word Games and Sarah Sarandos also attached.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, signaling that Lyonne is building a long-term filmmaking slate rather than dabbling behind the camera.

The tone, insiders suggest, will be raw and character-driven — less sports movie, more emotional reckoning.

From Boxing Rings to AI Worlds

Earlier this year, Lyonne announced her feature directorial debut, Uncanny Valley, produced by Asteria Film Co., the hybrid AI studio she co-founded.

That project blends live-action filmmaking with immersive game environments and centers on a teenage girl destabilized by a wildly popular AR video game. Lyonne is co-writing the script alongside Brit Marling and tech philosopher Jaron Lanier.

Taken together, Uncanny Valley and Bambo reveal a filmmaker eager to explore two extremes: the future of digital identity and the emotional wreckage of old-school American ambition.

Life After ‘Poker Face’

The announcement of Bambo also arrives amid major changes in Lyonne’s acting career.

Her Peacock hit Poker Face was unexpectedly canceled after two seasons, despite strong critical reception. Series creator Rian Johnson has since been shopping the show with Peter Dinklage as a potential new lead, replacing Lyonne’s beloved detective character, Charlie Cale.

Meanwhile, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, has publicly stated the network is “curious” about possibly reviving Poker Face — though no formal plans have been announced.

For Lyonne, however, the focus appears clear: authorship over her own stories.

A Filmmaker Claiming Her Voice

With Bambo, Lyonne is stepping into a cinematic tradition dominated by men — boxing movies, fatherhood sagas, American hustle myths — and reframing it through the eyes of a daughter who never asked to be part of the fight.

It’s a risky pivot. But risk, as Lyonne’s career has proven time and again, is where she thrives.

Christopher Nolan Rejects Matt Damon’s Claim That ‘The Odyssey’ Is Hollywood’s “Last of Its Kind”

The filmmaker says he disagrees with the idea that epic theatrical experiences like ‘The Odyssey’ are becoming a thing of the past.

Christopher Nolan has never been one to shy away from challenging conventional wisdom, and this time, the acclaimed filmmaker is responding to a surprising comment from one of his closest collaborators, Matt Damon.

During recent discussions surrounding their upcoming epic The Odyssey, Damon reportedly described the film as the “last of its kind,” suggesting that Hollywood may never again produce a project of such enormous scale and ambition. Nolan, however, made it clear that he doesn’t share that outlook.

“There’s a defeatist aspect of viewing it that way that I don’t agree with,” Nolan said, pushing back against the idea that The Odyssey marks the end of an era.

Rather than seeing the film as a farewell to grand cinematic storytelling, Nolan believes the future of filmmaking remains full of possibilities. According to the director, assuming that audiences or studios are no longer willing to embrace ambitious projects underestimates the industry’s ability to adapt and innovate.

The comments offer an interesting contrast between two longtime collaborators. Damon, who has worked with Nolan on major productions, appeared to frame The Odyssey as a rare achievement that may become increasingly difficult to replicate in today’s entertainment landscape. Nolan, meanwhile, sees no reason why bold filmmaking cannot continue to thrive.

The upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, one of the most influential works of ancient literature, is already generating enormous anticipation among moviegoers. Known for his visually immersive storytelling and preference for practical filmmaking techniques, Nolan is expected to bring a fresh cinematic vision to the timeless tale.

The project also continues Nolan’s streak of high-profile productions following the massive critical and commercial success of Oppenheimer, which cemented his status as one of the most influential directors working today. His films have consistently demonstrated that audiences are still willing to support original, large-scale stories when they are backed by compelling storytelling and technical excellence.

Industry observers have frequently debated whether the rise of streaming platforms, changing audience habits, and soaring production costs have made ambitious theatrical releases increasingly risky. Nolan’s latest remarks suggest he rejects that narrative, arguing that believing epic filmmaking has reached its endpoint only limits the industry’s imagination.

For Nolan, the future of cinema is not defined by pessimism but by creative ambition. While The Odyssey may become one of the biggest cinematic events of its generation, the director insists it should inspire more filmmakers—not convince them that such achievements are no longer possible.

As excitement builds around the film, Nolan’s response serves as a reminder that great storytelling has continually reinvented itself across generations. If his vision proves correct, The Odyssey may not be the last of its kind at all—it could simply be the beginning of another chapter for epic filmmaking.
