When prosthetic designer Mike Hill picked up the phone years ago and heard Guillermo del Toro say, “My next movie is Frankenstein,” he assumed it was just another casual conversation with a longtime collaborator. But what followed would shape the most personal film of del Toro’s career.

“No timeline, no follow-up, just that sentence,” Hill recalls. “I hung up thinking, ‘Wait… what?’”
Weeks later, over breakfast, del Toro delivered the real message — one that stunned Hill.

“If you don’t do this movie, Mike, I’m not doing this movie,” the Oscar-winning filmmaker told him.
Hill laughs now, calling it “flattering and terrifying all at once.”

The Trust Behind a Monster — and Why Hill Didn’t Want Him to Look Like One

For decades, del Toro and Hill have built some of cinema’s most memorable creatures together. Hill sculpted the iconic, romantic amphibian in The Shape of Water — a film that won Best Picture and earned him a BAFTA nomination.
