“Bodybuilder Beaten to Death After Standing Up for Women”: What Really Happened to Haryana’s Para-Athlete Rohit Dhankhar?
The shocking murder of national para-athlete Rohit Dhankhar has sparked statewide outrage as family members call it a “planned assault” after he confronted men accused of harassing women at a wedding.
Haryana woke up to a deeply disturbing crime this weekend — the brutal killing of Rohit Dhankhar, a 26-year-old national para-athlete and bodybuilder from Rohtak. Dhankhar, a celebrated sportsperson who had represented India at multiple international events, died on Saturday after a mob attacked him with sticks, rods, and sharp weapons, allegedly for confronting a group of men harassing women at a wedding in Bhiwani.
Family members described the killing as “barbaric” and “pre-planned,” revealing that not a single part of Rohit’s body was spared.
Who Was Rohit Dhankhar? A Rising Star Silenced Too Soon
Dhankhar was not just another name in the sports circuit. He was a decorated athlete who had brought honour to India.
- He trained athletes at Gymkhana Club Rohtak.
- He won a gold medal at the 2018 National Powerlifting Championship in Delhi, organised by the Para Olympic Committee of India.
- He reportedly won two international gold medals, earning recognition from then Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar , who felicitated him on Independence Day.
Despite being born with a disability in his right leg, Rohit turned his life into a story of grit — until violence ended it overnight.
The Night That Turned Deadly: What Happened at the Wedding?
On Friday evening, Rohit travelled to Bhiwani with his friend Jatin to offer shagun at a relative’s wedding. According to the family, the situation worsened when a baraat from Tigadana village arrived late at night.
A group of men from the wedding procession allegedly began harassing the women present. Witnesses said Rohit confronted them, asking them to behave.
What followed was a heated exchange — and the men left with threats.
But the matter didn’t end there.
Mob Attack Near Railway Crossing
Hours later, while returning home, Rohit and Jatin were waiting near a railway crossing. That’s when nearly 20 men, reportedly from the same baraat, surrounded their vehicle.
Armed with:
- sticks
- iron rods
- wooden planks
- sharp objects
…they launched a fatal assault.
Jatin managed to escape. But Rohit, with his disability, couldn’t run.
A family member described the horror:
“There wasn’t a single part of his body without injury marks.”

Fight for Life at PGIMS Rohtak — and a Family’s Broken Hope
Jatin returned with help and rushed the critically injured athlete to a local hospital. Doctors soon referred him to PGIMS Rohtak, where teams tried through the night to stabilise him.
Despite the efforts, Rohit succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.
His death has left the sporting community in shock — especially para-athletes who knew him personally.
Police Investigation Underway — Family Demands Justice
The Bhiwani Police reached PGIMS after being informed and have begun a probe based on the family’s official complaint. A post-mortem was conducted, and multiple teams have been formed to identify and arrest the attackers.
Rohit’s uncle Satish Dhanakhar and brother-in-law Ravi Khassa demanded strict punishment, saying:
“This was a planned murder. He stood up for the dignity of women and paid with his life.”
Their statements echo the sentiments of thousands on social media demanding swift justice.
A Larger Question: How Safe Are Whistle-Blowers?
Rohit’s death isn’t just a crime story — it’s a reflection of a society where standing up for women can still cost a man his life. Activists note that this case raises urgent concerns about:
- the protection of bystanders who intervene in harassment cases,
- the ease with which mobs assemble,
- and the increasing pattern of revenge attacks in rural north India.
The coming days will reveal whether the system honours Rohit’s courage — or whether his sacrifice becomes another forgotten statistic.
