West Australians can start marking their calendars for 2028, when the state is set to introduce two brand-new public holidays under upcoming legislation. Premier Roger Cook announced the move this week, saying the changes would modernize the holiday schedule and better align Western Australia with the rest of the nation.

But not everyone is celebrating. The proposal has sparked immediate backlash from the state opposition and small business leaders, who warn the changes could cost up to $200 million annually in extra wages.

What Are the New Holidays?

Under the legislation to be introduced to Parliament of Western Australia, the two new public holidays will be:

  • Easter Saturday – WA has long been the only Australian state not to formally recognize this as a holiday.
  • Show Day – set to coincide with the start of the September/October school holidays, aligning with the iconic Perth Royal Show.

“This will make life easier for families and businesses, and the state will be much better off,” Mr Cook said, highlighting that the reforms bring WA in line with other states.

Changes to Existing Holidays

The shake-up doesn’t stop there. Three existing public holidays will also be moved:

  • WA Day – shifted from June to the second Monday in November, to take advantage of better weather.
  • The King’s Birthday – moved from September to the second Monday in June.
  • Labour Day – pushed from the first Monday in March to the second Monday, except in election years when it would fall on the third Monday.

The Premier argued the new schedule is designed to create balance across the year, while giving families more certainty when planning.

A Long Adjustment Period

Mr Cook said the transition won’t happen overnight. The legislation is expected to pass by the end of 2025, but won’t come into effect until 2028. That two-year implementation period, he said, will give businesses and organisations enough time to prepare for the new arrangements.

“We understand that businesses need certainty,” Mr Cook said. “That’s why we’ve provided a long lead time for these changes to take effect.”

Opposition Pushback

However, not everyone is convinced. Opposition leader Basil Zempilas labeled the plan a “huge impost” on small businesses. He estimated the annual cost of additional wages would be between $150 million and $200 million.

“The cost of opening on that Saturday with the increased wages means many pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants won’t even bother opening,” Mr Zempilas said. “Small businesses are the lifeblood of WA, and this will hurt them.”

He added that while aligning WA with the eastern states may sound appealing, the government should be focusing on bigger issues: “People are worried about housing, hospitals, ambulance ramping, and aged care—not whether we have the same holidays as Sydney or Melbourne.”

Chamber of Commerce Response

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia also weighed in. Chief economist Aaron Morey described the decision as “disappointing” and warned it could push businesses to reconsider whether opening on public holidays is even viable.

“This increases wage bills considerably,” Mr Morey said. “Public holiday penalty rates can be up to 250 per cent above award. For many family businesses, that’s unsustainable.”

He suggested the government could ease the burden by reducing WA’s payroll tax, which he said was the highest in the country.

Community Perspective

While politicians clash, many families are quietly welcoming the changes. Parents say having Show Day as a holiday will make school holiday planning easier, while Easter Saturday gives them more time to celebrate religious traditions and spend with loved ones.

Local mum Lauren Smith said the move could help balance work and school leave: “It’s always tricky managing the September holidays. Having an extra day could be a game-changer for working parents.”

Looking Ahead

The proposed legislation is still subject to debate in parliament, but if passed, WA residents will enjoy a total of 13 public holidays per year by 2028. For workers, that’s good news. For businesses, the battle over costs is only just beginning.

As WA heads into this debate, the question remains: will the benefits of aligning with the rest of the country outweigh the costs to small businesses?

On Friday, June 6, 2025, Saudi Arabia observed Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant festivals in Islam. The date was determined following the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon on May 27, marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah on May 28. Consequently, Arafat Day was commemorated on Thursday, June 5, followed by Eid al-Adha on June 6.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” honors Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith and obedience to Allah. According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail in submission to God’s command. However, Allah intervened and provided a ram to sacrifice instead, symbolizing divine mercy and the importance of devotion.

The day commenced with congregational prayers held at mosques and open grounds across the Kingdom, including the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.
