Who Was Greg Monks The Family Man Whose Portugal Stag Trip Ended in Tragedy
From a beloved Glaswegian to a devoted brother and son, Greg Monks’s life and sudden disappearance in Portugal have left a nation mourning and asking questions.
The name Greg Monks has flooded headlines across the UK and beyond — not for the reasons his loved ones would have ever imagined. The 38-year-old from Glasgow, Scotland, vanished during a stag do in Portugal and was later found dead in a vacant, rugged part of Albufeira. But behind the tragic news lies the story of a man who was cherished deeply by his family and friends — a man whose sudden loss has left an irreplaceable void.
Born and raised in Cambuslang, just southeast of Glasgow, Greg was widely known as a cheerful, compassionate soul. According to his sisters Jillian and Carlyn, he was “a real family man” — someone who always made time for those closest to him and was deeply connected to his roots. He had an infectious laugh, a generous spirit, and a reputation as someone who could light up any room with his presence.
Professionally, Monks worked in the construction and trades sector — a field in which he earned the respect of colleagues for both his work ethic and easygoing demeanor. Though he lived a relatively low-profile life, his community viewed him as the guy who was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was helping neighbors or supporting friends through difficult times.
The trip to Portugal was meant to be a joyful escape — a celebratory break with his mates. Instead, it turned into a nightmare after Monks disappeared on the very first night. Last seen walking alone in the early hours of May 28, CCTV footage later showed him navigating a residential area more than an hour away from the busy Albufeira Strip.
His family flew out immediately to assist with the search. Heartbroken and desperate for answers, they spoke with the media and took to social platforms to share his photo and plea for help. “He deserves to be found,” Jillian said in an interview. “He’s not just anyone — he’s our Greg. He’s a big part of our family.” Their words struck a chord with thousands who joined the call to find him.
Greg’s death was confirmed after local police found a body in the Cerro de Aguia region, a rocky area difficult to search. The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, pending autopsy results, but the heartbreak among those who knew him is already overwhelming.
Jillian later wrote in a tribute on Facebook: “Greg was an amazing boy who everyone thought so highly of, was friends with everyone, and always made us laugh. If love coulda saved you, you would live forever.”
As the investigation continues, Greg Monks is remembered not just as a missing person or a tragic headline — but as a son, a brother, a friend, and a kind-hearted man who touched many lives. His story is now a somber reminder of how quickly joy can turn into grief, and how one life can mean so much to so many.
